IEEE ExecComm Meeting 06-12-06

Chairman [Boris Gramatikov] called the meeting to order at 6:45P

·         Boris--yielded chair to Tom Patton for a recap of Chapter Chair—65 people.  Speaker was very good in presenting deep space missions; the dinner was kept way under budget.  Move to request spread of time between robot challenge and chapter chair dinner…can’t get all of the responses—March 24-25 will be the new date to hold robot challenge—

Chair business—

·         Jeff requested pictures from dinner from Bob Berkovits.

·         Globecom 2007—asked to participate with liability up to 20K…we were asked to share 20% of the liability with DC/Northern Virginia –obscure how liability is calculated…cap suggested up to $5K. DC accepted their proposal, but not Baltimore…will live with $5K cap.  Will sign MOU (memo of understanding)…profit possible…related to that we received similar proposal from Veh. Tech conference.

·         Vehicular Technology Society Conference —in Baltimore also Fall 2007; No local chapter.   Can’t organize a chapter so soon.  Move conference to another city.  Need desparate support from local chapter.  Still want $20K liability.  Isn’t the same size as Globecom;   debate ensued about electronics/engineering involved in this society;    wait and see attitude proposed until we see how things pan out.  Tom Patton raised a motion to check on their plans and what are our common resources and to keep us informed and respond accordingly .  Motion carried.;

·         From Maryland Mathematics Engineering Science Achievement (MESA) Jeff Friedhoffer received letter of thanks.)

·         Boris got a letter inquiring about 3 local chapters…AES, PE-31 and AP-MTT inactive status. Re: PE Last one did not report on time—needs to report meetings right away; Suggested link to L31 page—immediately from web page; PE-31 is doing better; requested report from Dewane;  they have a solid plan for resumption of activites—AES –truly defunct;  no response seen from Bob C.  no interest seen at this time;   move to prune section completely;   Ron suggested joint meetings with AES and SP.; Always joint meetings.  Societies can be combined.   When there is pre-existing; two L31s are send in.

·         Graduate student member classification made.  They can be made officers.  Allows grad students to hold office;

·         Letter of appreciation received from RAB Small/Large section for diligence in preparation of nominating materials regional activities

PACE and WIE reports- Carole Carey/Tina Kohler—schedule date for M-PAC conference is Oct. 14-15 weekend.  Originally for Cherry Hill, NJ will send out survey to WIE; .10-13% want DC area; perhaps Capitol College venue;  IEEE planning services maybe able to help sign up online and conference services—planning comm.. with Southern NJ, DC, Baltimore,   Philadelphia and  concentrate this week on agenda;  one speaker is Dr. Ruth David, CEO Analytic Services; Another is Alene Hammond;  Goal of conference is the Empowering of women in  economic, political cultural and engineering milieus; panel discussions;  no theme yet;  students and engineers together in; transitioning to work place; out of the box technologies; SBA—how to start a business…networking activities.   Dinner--banquet and coffee breaks—no lunch; Need to seek Commitment of section-for Women in Engineering M-PAC conference;

Secretary--David reports that new EMB chair-possible joint meetings with Washington

Robot Challenge/Education--Neville reports—

·         data from judges needed to be placed in students hands before they head off on vacation.

·         Sponsors could provide better recognition without sponsors getting mentioned overtly as in advertising; Individual participation;  $25 gift certificates mentioned.  – as possible additional prizeds

·         Immediate feedback requested for Live Updates during Challenge--via CCTV and score (tote) boards;  Auditors looked at results;  better display of results;  CCBC might be involved with computer programmers;
