ComSoc Meeting 20 May 1999

Title: "Moving Beyond Cryptography: Securing Your Enterprise for E-Commerce"

Abstract

Nearly 80 percent of global CEOs surveyed believe Internet-enabled electronic business will reshape competition in their industries, according to a recent Price Waterhouse/World Economic Forum Survey. Today, electronic commerce is largely performed on an inherently insecure medium --- the Internet. The challenge will be to ensure that the enterprise is secured so that organizations can gain a competitive edge in a constantly changing electronic marketplace, and to do so efficiently without compromising business opportunities and information assets. In this talk, Dr. Anup K. Ghosh, author of the definitive book on e-commerce security, E-Commerce Security: Weak Links, Best Defenses (Wiley, 1998), identifies the vulnerabilities and threats that are in the diverse applications, networks, and systems in organizations. Contrary to what is accepted as conventional wisdom, Dr. Ghosh dispels the notion that cryptography is the solution to e-commerce security. Rather, he discusses the four critical components of e-commerce systems that must be secured in order to engage in secure electronic commerce.
