Mobile Data Networks are beginning to make major inroads into niche markets and are gaining acceptability into the consumer market. This is after years of predictions of pending explosions in usage. However the millions of potential mobile users can not be ignored and new applications will continue to be developed allowing untethered access to the Internet and private networks.
The discussion will look at all the major wireless data networks in the US, both terrestrial and satellite, in terms of the technology used and successful applications, for example CDPD, ARDIS, Ram Mobile and Orbcomm. We will also look at some potential new applications and technologies. We will then attempt to make a feature and cost comparison for various types of potential users.
Mr. Rickerson is a Staff Systems Engineer for Lockheed Martin working with Air-to-Ground and satellite Communications Systems Engineering at the FAA. He holds a BS in CS from Edinboro University, MA in telecommunications at George Mason University and was a former Army Signal Officer.
