Minutes of IEEE/LVS/SSCS/Executive Committee Planning Meeting January 29, 2013: 6PM at Sammi's Pizza, Wescosville, PA

Revision Summary:

Numerous name spelling corrections; added action items for Bob Peruzzi on 'Museum' and 'Morton' sections. Thanks to Roger and Bob for the additions and corrections.

In Attendance:

Robert Peruzzi, Ian Rippke, Roger Minear, Paul Davis, Dale Nelson, Betty Perry, Robert Walden, Richard Booth, and Glen Offord

Election:

In the first order of business, the 2013 unopposed officer slate was approved:

Electronics/Manufacturing History Museum:

The new chair, Bob Peruzzi, informed the committee of a call for volunteers to help identify a truckload of Western Electric/Bell Laboratory artifacts and memorabilia intended for inclusion into a planned museum near Steel Stacks in South-Side Bethlehem. George Allerton, Austin Bleu, and Chuck Adomshick working with the LV IEEEE are heading this work. There was much discussion and general consensus that our SSCS chapter wants to support this effort. It was suggested Mike DePaolis be contacted for memory artifacts. Roger was interested in financially supporting this effort but was concerned about our money reserves. It was decided to hold off on financial support at this time since federal grant money may be available. Action Items: Bob Peruzzi will introduce Paul Davis to George, Austin and Chuck as our SSCS contact. When given the go-ahead by Paul, Bob will send announcements to a wider LVS audience.

Technical Talks:

Morton Contest:

Last year our chapter gave $500 to the Morton Contest and tentatively $500 was promised for this year. Roger expressed money concerns particularly if we were to support the 'museum' opportunity and Glen was concerned there was no benefit to the SSCS for the monies spent. It was suggested that this year we consider giving $250 without strings and $250 as an additional SSCS prize to the best solid-state paper entered in the Morton Contest if judged of sufficient quality. For subsequent years, perhaps only the SSCS paper award. Ian Rippke volunteered to be our SSCS Morton representative/judge. Action Item: Bob Peruzzi will make the initial contact with Don Talhelm and LVS officers introducing Ian as our SSCS contact.

Treasurer Reports:

Glen asked SSCS section treasurer, Roger Minear, to provide a treasurer's summary to be included with the minutes on future planning meetings. Roger reported having a full spreadsheet on monies spent and thought we had several hundred to $1K in reserves but he did not have a full accounting since our section financial account is within the LV-IEEE treasurer's account (George Beam - Treasurer). Glen remarked that George Beam has been treasurer for many years (>30) in violation of the 2 year IEEE office limit. Action Item: The committee requested Roger to ask George Beam for a full SSCS accounting.

Best Chapter:

Ian suggested we go for Best Chapter award this year. It seems the Denver chapter usually gets this award. Perhaps with the 'museum' initiative, SSCS paper within the Morton Contest, and Distinguished Lectures we can pull this off.

Misc:

Ian asked help in finding a job for Eric Turgeon, BSEE PSU.

For the committee,
Glen Offord, Secretary
