The June chapter meeting of the NoVA/DC /DC IEEE Computer Society will feature a presentation by Mark Barnes, a human/computers interface expert, on usability testing. In this presentation, Dr. Barnes will examine the practice of usability testing, with an emphasis on its use within the software development industry. The presenter will provide a brief overview of the Human Factors field and usability techniques. The discussion will proceed to a more detailed look into software usability testing approaches, the problems that usability testing can solve, and a cost/benefit trade-off analysis of usability testing. The presentation will incorporate numerous examples, both within and outside the software development environment, in order to demonstrate that usability testing can improve software both early in design and after implementation. Examples and heuristics from personal experience will be presented to assist attendees in applying the presentation ideas in a practical software environment. References to applied and academic readings will also be supplied.
Dr. Barnes is a human-interface specialist for McDonald Bradley, Inc. He earned his doctorate in Human Factors Engineering from George Mason University. He is a member of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES) and the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). Dr. Barnes has had the opportunity to work and publish in several emerging technology areas, including the new air traffic control system, an automated highway system, new hearing aid technologies, and object-oriented software design. He considers the software development field as a continuing and challenging opportunity for the application of human factors techniques. |
