"Grid Computing" Abstract

The grid offers the potential for more efficient use of computational resources both within an organization and between organizations. By allowing individuals or organizations to pool their computing power and share resources, peaks and valleys in utilization can be smoothed out. In this talk, I will describe the technical challenges to build grid systems and some of the current solutions to these problems. Challenges include: security, scheduling, resource monitoring, and fault tolerance.  I will also touch on some of the non-technical aspects of cooperative resource sharing such as social contracts.
