Orlando
Section Membership Development Report - March 25,
2011
The number of active
members at all grades in the Orlando Section, which fell dramatically to 1156 on
March 6, 2011, grew modestly to 1197 as of March 24, 2011. The earlier decrease
occurred due to the annual removal of Members-in-Arrears from all membership
rosters by IEEE MD in early March.
A comparison with the
totals for March 24, 2010 shows significant
year-over-year losses in the Orlando Section, particularly among
Members, Graduate Student Members, and Student Members.

Recent
changes occurred in the following grades: Associate Members (4),
Graduate Student Member (13), Life Member (2), Member (15), Senior Member
(2), and Student Member (5).
From February 23, 2011
through March
23,
2011, 16 new members joined the Orlando
Section: 1 Member, 9 Student Members, and 6 Graduate
Student Members. Please welcome these new IEEE members. Their names and
technical interests appear on the attached list of new IEEE
members to the Orlando Section.
From February 23, 2011
through March
23, 2011, 3 active IEEE
members moved to the Orlando Section: 2 Members and 1 Student Member.
Please welcome the IEEE members who have moved to the Orlando Section.
Their names along with their technical interests are shown on the
attached list.
Since it requires far less effort to
recover a former member than to
recruit a new one, the MD Chair of the Orlando Section is contacting as
many of the “lapsed” members as possible to appeal to them to renew
and to determine the reasons for their
non-renewal.
Accordingly, the list
of 359 Members-in-Arrears in
the Orlando Section, as of March 24, 2011, has been ordered by IEEE grade and
color-coded to indicate the affiliation of these lapsed members. The
list is attached to this report.
For example, the
MD Chair
will contact lapsed members at the Member and Senior Member Grade, with the
exception of the lapsed members at these grades who are affiliated with the
University of Central Florida (color-coded in yellow); the latter should be
contacted by ExCom members in the UCF community. The Chair of the UCF Student
Branch should contact those lapsed Student Members at UCF (color-coded in
blue), while the Chair of the UCF Graduate Student Branch should contact
lapsed Graduate Student Members at UCF (color-coded in pink).
Similarly, members of the Life Affinity Group should continue to contact lapsed
Life grade members on the list (color-coded in green).
It is suggested that the
first contact be an email message, where permitted. The message
should, as a minimum, ask the reason(s) for non-renewal: economic,
job loss, pay cut, etc.; graduation; procrastination; death; or other. The
message should also ask the lapsed member to recommend how the Orlando Section
could improve its activities to promote timely member renewals.
The last webcast for the IEEE
Membership Development Committee was conducted on Saturday, March 19, 2011,
based on February 2011 data. A PDF file of the webcast content is
attached to this report. The next webcast is scheduled for April 16,
2011.
