Novel Applications of the Dielectric Resonator Investigations on resonance exhibited by dielectric objects of finite extent dated back to the time of Debye and Richtmyer. Engineering applications of the dielectric resonator had been rather limited until perovskite-based temperature stabilized ceramics became available. Dielectric resonator oscillators (DRO) and dielectric resonator filters are finding wide applications in microwave systems today. As a compact circuit element, the dielectric resonator has advantages in areas of applications beyond filters and oscillators. This presentation describes some unconventional usage of the dielectric resonator as explored in the microwave laboratory at IIT and in collaboration with other laboratories over the past several years. These include perturbative methods for material properties measurement, microwave frequency discriminators, and wave-guiding structures for particle acceleration. |
