Matching Network Considerations for Obtaining Broadband High Impedance Transformations When designing power amplifiers for cellular phones, the output matching network transforms the output impedance down to within a few ohms. Designing a matching network such as this and maintaining good bandwidth is difficult. This presentation discusses techniques for designing broadband T-line matching networks requiring high impedance transformations. The Smith Chart is used to help explain various design approaches using Loaded T-line Impedance Circles (LTIC). The definition of LTICs and their properties are discussed. The relationship between matching network bandwidth and quality factor is described. The exponential T-line equation and its derivation are given. The Q/KZ Chart and its applications for designing exponential T-line structures are introduced. Design examples and simulation results are presented. An infinity bandwidth matching network structure having an impedance ratio of 50:1 is shown. |
