Extraordinary Advantages of Migrating from Discrete to Integrated Optical and
Opto-electronic Components

Presented by: Craig Miller, Ph.D - Director of Technical Business Development with Somers-Stanton in Lake Zurich, IL

We are several decades into the progression of Moore's Law, and we are still
seeing improvements in cost and reliability for higher levels of integration.
Opto-Electronic Systems, in particular, are typically showing dramatic and
unexpected improvements at higher levels of integration. An actual, test case
will be presented illustrating the noteworthy improvement in cost which are now
possible. The test vehicle we will study is an Optical Networking product. One
version, realized from mostly discrete optical technology, will be compared to a
concept version implemented from advanced integrated optical, opto-electronic
and hybrid components. The presentation includes the tradeoffs made to achieve
the advantages, while addressing the impact of component availability, tight
performance specifi! cations, preserving architectural features already attractive
to customers and establishing manufacturing capability.

Speaker:

Craig Miller has Ph.D. and Masters Degrees from Northwestern University,
specializing in the areas of Semiconductor Physics and OPTO-Electronics. He has served as Technology Manager, Project Manager and Director of Advanced
Manufacturing Technology at TELLABS, after serving as a Distinguished Member of Technical Staff at Bell Labs in Naperville, Ilinois. He is currently Director of Technical Business Development with Somers-Stanton in Lake Zurich, IL.
