Title: "Motorola's Improved Broadband over Power Line"

Speaker: Dick Illman, Principal Staff Engineer - Motorola's Enterprise Mobility Solutions in Schaumburg, IL

Abstract:
BroadBand over Power Line (BPL) is seen by some as a cost effective competitor to Cable and DSL Internet consumer access as well as a way to improve the reliability of the electric utility services.   It is seen by others as a large source of intolerable interference in the HF spectrum.   Motorola has developed an enhancement to the HomePlug standard, called Powerline LV which reduces HF interference to and from infrastructure and does not use the medium voltage power lines as a radiating element.

About the Speaker:
Mr. Illman is a Principal Staff Engineer with Motorola's Enterprise Mobility Solutions in Schaumburg, Illinois.   His 31 year career with Motorola has focused on System Design and Implementation.   He has been working on enhancements to a Canopy(tm) wireless and HomePlug standard solution for delivering IP connectivity using only low voltage electric utility power lines.   This solution includes RF interference protection to and from existing licensed HF users.

Mr. Illman provides technical support for a wide variety of wireless and wired solutions for customers in the Enterprise market space including Utilities, Fortune 500, Transportation, and Couriers.   Prior to working in Schaumburg, Mr. Illman was the Engineering Project Manager for the Korea High Speed Rail System and was the engineering manager for the Pacific Area including Alaska, Hawaii, all South Pacific Islands, and portions of Asia.

Mr. Illman has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electronic Engineering from California Polytechnic State University.   He has a patent for interference reducing enhancements to the HomePlug standard.   Mr. Illman has been an active licensed amateur radio operator since 1969.

19 OCTOBER 2005 (WEDNESDAY), 6:00PM - 9PM at IIT Rice Campus

Title: "Power over Ethernet"

Speaker: Ronald Nordin, Panduit Corporation

Abstract:
Power over Ethernet (PoE) is a revolutionary technology that extends the already ultra-broad functionality of Ethernet by supplying reliable DC power over the same Category 5/5e twisted-pair cable that currently carries Ethernet data.   PoE, modeled after the technology used by the telecommunications industry to supply reliable power to telephones, enables lifeline quality power for IP telephones (VoIP) as well as many other low power Ethernet network devices like wireless access points (WAP) and security cameras.

PoE, or IEEE standard reference 802.3af, began the standardization process in 1999 to address the need to ensure interoperability among a growing number of proprietary methods of distributing DC power to network devices.   Now that the standard has been passed, the ubiquitous Ethernet RJ-45 plug and outlet make up the first universal worldwide power connectors.   Consequently, PoE equipment vendors are designing standards-based products that leverage the numerous advantages offered by PoE.   These products include security access systems, battery chargers, vending and gaming machines, electric guitars and even electronic shavers.   Constantly emerging applications using PoE are limited only by the ingenuity of the product designers.

This presentation will address the what the PoE standard is, types of sourcing equipment, various types of receiving equipment, and the next PoE standard under development.

About the Speaker:
Ron Nordin, Ph.D. received his BSEE from Purdue University in 1977, MSEE and Ph.D. EE from Northwestern University in 1979 and 1984 respectively.   He joined Panduit Corporation in 2002 in the Network Systems Division.   Prior to Panduit, he was head of Engineering at MAMINOS, a communications equipment research and development company.   Prior to MAMINOS, he was in the research and development at Lucent Technologies in the switching systems and access product divisions for 24 years.   Ron was a Distinguished Member of Technical Staff at Bell Laboratories and a Technical Manager with fundamental expertise in analog, digital, and optical technologies.   He was involved in various aspects of design and development of access technologies including the Line Unit family, ISDN, passive optical networks (PONs), Hybrid Fiber Coaxial (HFC) systems, Access Interface Unit, ADSL systems and multi-gigabit ATM access systems.

In addition, Ron is recognized as an expert in digital and analog integrated circuits, high-speed electrical and optical interconnection devices, and the design of advanced switching fabrics.   Ron has been awarded 10 patents, co-authored 7 technical books and has published numerous technical papers.   Ron is also an Adjunct Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering at Illinois Institute of Technology for 20 years.

18 JANUARY 2006 (WEDNESDAY), 6:00PM - 9PM at IIT Rice Campus

Title: "Solar Energy: Challenges and Opportunities"

Speaker: Dr. Michael R. Wasielewski, Northwestern University

Abstract:
The global demand for energy will double by 2050 and triple by the end of the century.   Our existing energy sources, fossil, nuclear and renewable, all face major challenges in supplying the additional energy needed for the next 50-100 years.   Possible routes for producing the needed energy will be analysed, with emphasis on the basic research breakthroughs that will enable sunlight to provide a significant fraction of our future energy needs.

About the Speaker:
Michael R. Wasielewski was born in Chicago, Illinois.   He received both his Bachelor of Science (1971) and Ph.D. (1975) degrees from the University of Chicago.   He carried out his graduate research in physical organic chemistry under the guidance of Leon M. Stock. He then performed postdoctoral research, first with Ronald Breslow at Columbia University, and then with Joseph Katz at the Argonne National Laboratory.   Following postdoctoral studies, he joined the scientific staff of the Argonne National Laboratory, where he rose through the ranks to become a Senior Scientist and Group Leader of the Molecular Photonics Group.   In 1994 Wasielewski joined the faculty of Northwestern University, where he is Professor of Chemistry.   He served as Chair of the Chemistry Department from 2001-2004.

Wasielewski's research interests include photoinduced electron transfer and charge transport in organic molecules and materials, self-assembly of nanoscale materials, the magnetic properties of radical ion pairs, ultrafast optical and magnetic resonance techniques, materials for molecule-based opto-electronics and spintronics, and the biophysics of proteins involved in the primary processes of photosynthesis.   His research has resulted in over 280 publications. Wasielewski was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1995, and has held numerous distinguished lectureships and fellowships.   Among Wasielewskis recent awards are the 2004 Photochemistry Research Award of the Inter-American Photochemical Society and the 2006 American Chemical Society James Flack Norris Award in Physical Organic Chemistry.
