20 OCTOBER 2009 (TUESDAY), 6:00PM - 9:00PM

JOINT MEETING with IEEE Chicago EMC Society, Fox Valley Subsection and SAE
at Elite Electronics Engineering, Downers Grove, IL
Reservations required - presentation begins at 7:00pm
"Oktoberfest" and keynote topic: Vehicle Telematics Technology

Keynote speaker: Emad Isaac, Chief Technology Officer for the Morey Corporation of Woodridge Illinois

Abstract:
The Chicago chapters of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), IEEE Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Society and Fox Valley Subsection are pleased to announce a joint meeting of the two professional organizations. This will be the third such joint meeting in the past six years. Elite Electronic Engineering is proud to be the meeting host and sponsor. The meeting topic has been selected to overlap the interests of both societies. The keynote presentation, “Current Commercial Telematics Technology”, will explore the concepts, benefits, technology and innovation behind real-time monitoring of commercial vehicles and assets through advanced electronics, GPS systems, and wireless communications. The speaker will be Emad Isaac, Chief Technology Officer for the Morey Corporation of Woodridge Illinois. With telematics technology, the exact location of vehicles and assets can be tracked to help fleet operators continually manage equipment, cargo, and personnel. The benefits of telematics asset tracking include improved logistics planning for more fuel-efficient routing and streamline maintenance. Vehicle systems can be monitored for key parameters like fuel usage, battery voltage, engine hours, and fault codes for the purpose of improving fleet efficiency and uptime. By knowing the operations and maintenance status, fleet managers can direct vehicles to a nearby service station at a time coordinated with drivers required rest period. Certain applications of telematics also alert fleet managers when vehicles enter or leave designated locations. This is especially useful for homeland security in situations where hazardous truck cargo may be misdirected, stolen, or even hijacked. As an added interest, members of the Fox Valley Electric Auto Association will have one or two electric vehicles at this event. The cars will be on display during the social hour and FVEAA members will be on hand to talk about their vehicles and answer questions from meeting attendees. As with past joint events, this meeting has an “Oktoberfest” theme and includes dinner, refreshments, and music. The dinner and background polka music make for an enjoyable social event and provides a great opportunity for members of each society to cross-network. Dinner will be German cuisine of bratwurst, pork loin, red cabbage and sauerkraut, as well as apple strudel. Past SAE-IEEE joint chapter meetings have been very well attended and a large audience is anticipated for this event. Early registration for this meeting is recommended.

Title: "Materials for new computers: smaller bits and faster memory"

Speaker: Amanda Petford-Long, Senior Scientist, Argonne National laboratory

Abstract:
The rapid increase in information storage density, and in memory density and speed, have been brought about in part by the development of new materials.  These are often layered structures, with properties that are engineered by controlling their microstructure and chemical profile.  In addition the materials are laterally confined at the sub-micron scale for example as rings, dots or pillars.  In this presentation I will discuss the way in which we can use advanced microscopy techniques to understand not only the structure and composition of these complex materials, but also their magnetic and electrical behavior.

About the Speaker:
Dr. Petford-Long is a Senior Scientist in the Materials Science Division at Argonne, National Laboratory, which she joined in August 2005.  Since Sept 2008 she has also been a Professor in the Materials Science and Engineering Department at Northwestern University.  She has a BSc in Physics from University College London and a DPhil in Materials Science from the University of Oxford, where she was a Professor in the Materials Department until she joined Argonne.  Her research focuses on correlating physical properties of layered thin films and nanoparticles with microstructure and composition profile.  Of particular interest are materials for information storage applications.  She has developed in-situ TEM facilities for analyzing magnetization and transport behavior and has published over 270 papers.

Title: "United States Patent Office Accelerated Examination Program"

Speaker: Ronald E. Andermann, Cardinal Intellectual Property, Inc.

Abstract:
Patent application backlog at the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) increased to almost 1,300,000 in 2008.  Average pendency of a patent application is approaching three years.  Patent application allowance rates has dropped dramatically to as low as 44% in 2008.

In response to some of these problems, in 2006 the USPTO established procedures under which the examination of a patent application may be accelerated.  The objective of the accelerated examination (AE) program is to complete the examination of an application within twelve months from the filing date of the application. Early performance for patent applications that have entered the AE program has been good.  Patent pendency for AE applications are averaging just over six months and allowance rates have been exceeding 70%.  This presentation introduces the accelerated examination program and its requirements in an effort to make engineers and inventors aware of this option when discussing inventions and patent applications with their patent attorney or agent.

About the Speaker:
Ron Andermann is a Patent Attorney admitted to the Illinois bar and registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.  Ron handles a multitude of intellectual property matters from patent and trademark applications to transactional issues such as licensing and negotiating intellectual property agreements.  Ron graduated from The John Marshall Law School in Chicago, a nationally ranked law school in intellectual property.

Title: "Steganography"

Speaker: Bill Lidinsky, Director of Security and Forensics Laboratory, IIT School of Applied Technology.

Abstract:
Steganography has been part of the human experience since before Herodotus chronicled it for the first time in the 4th century BC. But with the advent of computers, the Internet and digital representation of images, audio, video and documents of all types, steganography has moved into a new realm. It has become possible hide computer files within other computer files. The former are referred to as hidden or covert files while the latter are the carrier or overt files. The goal of digital steganography is a file that carries within it another file without being detectable as a carrier.
A related topic, steganalysis, concerns itself with determining whether a digital file is carrying covert information or is “clean”. While there have been advances for specific situations, steganalysis is an unsolved problem in the general case.

This talk will investigate several digital steganography schemes.  These schemes will be demonstrated for all to see and hear.  The talk will also discuss some approaches to steganalysis that have met with limited success.

About the speaker:
William Lidinsky is the Alva C. Todd Professor and Assistant Director of Information Technology and Management at Illinois Institute of Technology's Center for Professional Development.  Prior to joining IIT he was the Head of the High Energy Physics Network Resource Center at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, supervised research groups at AT&T Bell Laboratories, International Harvester's Science and Technology Laboratory and Argonne National Laboratory.
