Topic: "Women in Computing: Why are There so Few of Us?"
Did you ever wonder why there are only 18% women studying computing in the US? Where else are there
women in the classroom and do they continue equal representation in the workforce? From the work in
the United States, the current studies begun in Brazil, and brief overview of other countries, why are
certain places successful in certain levels but not at others? What are the lessons we can learn
from our neighbors? This interactive session will provide a brief overview of the gender diversity
situation including directions and potential best practices. It is hoped that the audience will
provide information about their particular communities and ask provocative questions to the audience at large.
Biography of Dr. Jane Prey
Jane Prey recently retired from Microsoft where she led the Tablet Technologies in Higher Education Initiative and the Gender Equity and Pipeline Strategy for Microsoft Research .She is currently a member of the ACM Education Board , the Computer Research Association Board , the IEEE Computer Society Board of Governors and numerous university advisory boards. She has served as chair of the Frontiers in Education Steering Committee and as well as general chair for the ACM SIGCSE Conference . She spent 11 years on the faculty of the Computer Science Department at the University of Virginia . In addition, Dr. Prey also spent two years as a program director in the Division of Undergraduate Education at the National Science Foundation . She joined Microsoft Research in 2004.
She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Illinois and her Ph.D. from the University of Virginia .
