2011 IEEE Workshop on Microelectronics and Electron
Devices The High School Program The High School program at the WMED conference is focused on encouraging students to explore education and careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Through this half day program at the workshop we aim to present to High school students the potential options in engineering and technology. Nearly 50 Students from various schools across the Treasure Valley are invited to participate and benefit from this.
The program has been active since 2006 and has gradually grown. In the past the program has hosted speakers from a wide range of engineering careers. Past speakers have included Chemist Dr. Janos Fucsko and Micron Vice President Dean Klein to name a few.
In its 5th year now the program has seen increasing response and involvement from schools across the Valley. Special focus groups like TVMSC (Treasure Valley Math and Science Center) and school based physics clubs have shown keen interest. This year’s program consists of panels of engineers for open discussion on topics like career choices, day-in-the-life-of-an-engineer, experiences and interesting anecdote and what it means to be at the forefront of technological innovation. Dr. Chandra Mouli, Director of Device Technology at Micron, will give an educational talk for the students, on how to be successful in technology careers. The kids will also get to participate in the keynote talk by Dr. Mike Kozicki on emerging memory, at the main conference alongside professional engineers.
