ADSL - Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line
- High speed communications over twisted pair.
- Concurrent with plain old telephone service (POTS).
- Is always terminated at the central office (CO).
Originally standardized in ANSI T1 in 1993.
Offers downstream data rates of up to 6-8 Mbps and upstream of up to 800Kbps to 1 Mbps.
Very little deployment to date.
- Telcos cannot provision at the customer’s willingness-to-pay point.
- Could negatively impact profitable business services, such as T1.
