An evening exclusively for IEEE members and their guests, consisting of a planetarium show at 6:00 p.m., a Megamax theater show at 7:00 p.m., followed by a talk and tour by founding CSSC Board member Dr. Glen Dahlbacka. (The CSSC will be closed to the public on this evening.)

The New Chabot Space and Science Center

The new $80 million, 72,000 square foot Chabot Space and Science Center has just opened in Oakland's Joaquin Miller Park. It builds on the former Chabot Observatory and Science Center's history as the site of the first public observatory in the western U.S., as well as its highly regarded 114-year old educational and community programs in astronomy. The Bay Area is blessed with excellent universities and science museums. The new CSSC complements these institutions and supports schools with a completely new concept in science education - a charter public laboratory and teacher training center with world-class equipment, scientific expertise and formal ties to government, industry and the community. The CSSC and its programs constitute a vertically integrated science education facility, supporting entertaining science programs that reach the entire community, as well as serious research in science education and teacher training.

As a community-based science center with superior equipment, CSSC provides teachers and their students with activities that directly support the California State Board of Education Frameworks in Science, Mathematics, Technology and Environmental Education, as well as National Science Standards. It will also be an after-school and weekend destination for young scientists.

The IEEE evening will include a presentation by founding board member, Glen Dahlbacka, a tour of the facility and a planetarium and Megamax theatre show.

Glen was raised in Michigan and Illinois, earned a Ph.D. in Astrophysics from the University of Minnesota and moved to Livermore, California in 1972 where he worked at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory on laser fusion. He was active in the community as a Livermore Planning Commissioner and Council-member. Glen then worked in the private sector for 15 years in various areas of x-ray physics and is currently at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory as a Senior Program Manager. He is the Vice Chair of the Board of Directors of the Chabot Space and Science Center where he has served as a volunteer for 13 years. For the last 20 years he has resided in Oakland.
