Abstract:
This presentation gives an overview of the requirements of the photonic components in their insertion in analog applications such as CATV, antenna remoting and base station connections in wired and wireless communication systems. While the driving force for their use is bandwidth and efficiency, the eventual limiting factors would be cost, performance, and reliability. The presentation reviews the advances in the state-of-the-art photonics devices such as laser diodes, high power lasers, external modulators, and photodetectors. In particular, waveguide modulators made of bulk semiconductors, multiple quantum wells, Si nano-slots have been considered for the transmitter and optimized for analog link applications. Comparisons will also be made regarding the direct modulation scheme versus the external modulation scheme.

Speaker bio:
Dr. Paul Yu is the William S. C. Chang Endowed Chair and Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and the Provost of Revelle College at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). At UCSD he offers courses in solid state electronics and optoelectronics as well as conducts research on semiconductor materials and devices, integration technologies for various photonics, microwave and sensor applications. His research interests include: optical/RF schemes for multi-octave, high frequency microwave transmission in fibers; high speed, high power optical detectors and high speed waveguide modulator for both digital and analog modulation; semiconductor optical switches for high power microwave generation and electronic analog-to-digital conversion; nanowires for solar cells and electro-optic applications. His research work includes novel designs using quantum wells and nanowire/polymer hybrid photodiode for potential solar cell application. Paul Yu has been the Principal Investigator or co-Principal Investigator of many projects on analog fiber links funded by the U.S. Department of Defense, NSF and aerospace industry. He was the President (2012-13) of the IEEE Electron Devices Society where he is a Distinguished Lecturer. He is a Fellow of IEEE, AAAS, Optical Society of America, and SPIE.
