The SF PEN Mark

By Kris Buchholz

We have been “publishing” The SF PEN for over twenty years, and many of you have been with us since the very beginning. You remember when we first started with Keene Matsuda as our Editor and a staff consisting of Keene, George Puffett and your current Editor… me. Over the years, we have been blessed with some GREAT staff writers and artists… I hope I don’t forget anyone… Jeff Wold became our first, and only, staff artist. Julian Ajello has been working with us for many years. He is always willing to help with anything, hard working and keeps us going with his quiet sense of humor. Dan Sparks also joined us several years ago, always making sure that we stretch beyond our SF Bay Area boundaries, plus he knows all the latest in technology. Bob Jauregui joined us for a few years after we started. Clyde Loutan was with us for a brief time, and we have missed him. We’ve had a few other helpers over the years including Gloria Jauregui, Freda Matsuda and Jacob Wold. Our publication started literally with us cutting and pasting the columns together, then we progressed to software that could create columns, but we still pasted pictures in by hand. Finally we were able to insert graphics AND digital pictures. And now, we are truly electronic on the Internet. We want to thank Pacific Gas and Electric for their many years of support, allowing us to use the offices for our Saturday publications.

I think I speak for all of the staff when I say that we have had a GREAT time publishing this newsletter over the years. It has been a labor of love to try to get information to all of our members. In addition, meeting once a weekend every three to four months has strengthened the friendship among the staff members. We have had a lot of fun and a lot of laughs. Jeff won’t let ANY of the engineers touch the copy machine, except George. We have a folding machine that has been helpful, but temperamental. All of us have had our share of tri-folding, paper cuts and counting the newsletters. Dan has carried so many boxes of newsletters, I’m sure he’s lost count. (Keene, remember the time we had the Jolt Cola®?) And after every edition, the staff goes out for a traditional celebration, where we continue our chance to catch up with our lives, hear about the family and find out the next vacation plans.

It is an interesting time in the history of The SF PEN. When we finished the last edition, we had an unfortunate incident occur. My vehicle was broken into and Dan and I lost our laptop computers, all of our electronic files and the entire history of The SF PEN. We were able to recover the files for the current edition by going through my office garbage and scanning in the articles. So, obviously it is interesting that we lose all of the history of the “hard copy” editions right when we transition to the Internet.

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO HAS BEEN OUR LOYAL READERS AND CONTRIBUTORS THROUGH IT ALL!!!!!!

You are probably wondering what caused us to have our “trip down memory lane”. I am finally going to turn my “pen and ink” over to our next editor, Gary Wong. Gary has recently joined the SF PES when he moved here a few months ago from Hong Kong. Gary is a Chartered Engineer; UK member of Institution of Electrical Engineers; Fellow member of the Society of Operations Engineers, UK; Fellow member of IplantE, IEEE member and was a Chief Representative of Tyco International Limited in Shanghai, China. He has enthusiastically volunteered to continue with our newsletter. He comes to this position with a lot of experience in project management and system control. Gary will be looking to all of you for continued feedback and articles. I am sure that he will take it to a level and format that will far exceed your hopes and needs. PLEASE join me in a big, hearty IEEE SF PEN WELCOME TO GARY!!!!! And feel free to contact him at gwong@ieee.org.
