Research Funding and Assessment

In this seminar, Professor Bull will overview the range of research grant sources available to UK academics. These include research councils (e.g. EPSRC), the Department of Trade and Industry, and the European Union FP6. A summary of typical programme/research areas will be given together with examples of successful grants. Some tips on how to be successful when applying for funding will also be provided.
Prof. Bull will also overview the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) used in the UK to assess and classify Universities in terms of their research output.
Finally, Professor Bull will describe the structure and portfolio of research projects currently running at the University of Bristol Centre for Communications Research as an example of an international research center of excellence.
