Area 4 Report - January 1999

Our principal effort for Florida sections is to offer the best
support possible for the local organization.  Another dimension of
this problem is to avoid any expense to the sections for this support.

Our last council meeting was dedicated to training new section
leaders.  The council funded travel for up to four section officers
to attend.  Jim Beall did an excellent job, with K.B. Sundarum's
assistance providing training for officers and newletter editors.  I
have had many good comments from attendees.  I hope that the council
will continue to provide local training at least once a year,
especially when SECon is out of state.  An interesting added benefit
of this years training session was that it was coordinated with a
region funded student activities training session for the same day
and location.  This permitted some economies of scale in travel costs
and also cross pollination of ideas and resources.

This year we will have a council meeting at SECon but other meetings
will depend on specific needs of the sections and Southcon.  If it is
practical, we will try to organize council activity to enhance
attendance at Southcon, which remains the principal funding mechanism
for council activities.  Carl Hussey is doing a great job heading
that project.

Other goals include better response to solicitations for nominees for
awards at all levels, and distributing information on good programs
from section to section.
