From r.riddle@ieee.org Wed Dec 1 10:13:06 1999 Date: Wed, 1 Dec 1999 07:58:32 -0500 From: Richard Riddle To: Region 3 ExCom 1999 Subject: Director-Elect Report for Dec 1999 Region 3 Excom To: Region 3 Executive Committee From: Richard L. Riddle, Director-Elect Subject: Director-Elect Report for Dec 1999 Region 3 ExCom Report to the Region 3 Executive Committee December 4-5, 1999 Meeting, Nashville, TN Richard L. Riddle, Director-Elect The year 2,000 is almost here. I would like to again express my gratitude to all of the Region 3 ExCom and the Region's volunteer leaders who have given so much of their time and talents to make 1999 another year to be proud of. Many impressive accomplishments were made during 1998-1999 and I hope that 2000-2001 will be as successful. Director Dale Caston has enumerated many of these accomplishments in his excellent report to the Executive Committee to which I add a loud "Amen". I feel that two of the projects mentioned by Dale should be expanded and carried forward into the year 2000. To that end I make the following recommendation for your concurrence and support: [1] The e-Conferencing project become an Ad Hoc committee called e-Conferencing with Bill Ratcliff as Chair. The purpose of this committee is to continue the work started in 1999, guide the implementation of e-conferencing within the Region 3 ExCom for use in conducting business in 2000, investigate the emerging technologies for improving e-conferencing, and develop the mechanisms for on going support and training. [2] The Corporate Relations project become an Ad Hoc committee called Corporate Relations with Bill Harrison as Chair. The purpose of this committee is to continue the progress started in 1999 by making companies conscious of what IEEE can do for them and their technical professional employees and to expand corporate awareness of the benefits offered by IEEE throughout or region. Many of our sections continue to experience loss of leaders and members due to corporate reorganizations, downsizing, and layoffs. Some have many more members than the minimum requirement to be maintained as an active section, but are unable to find leaders to serve as the required principal officers. As a result the section has become inactive and on the verge of collapse. In addition too inactive sections we find many chapters faced with similar problems. In an effort to focus and assist these sections and chapters by working with the Area/Council Chairs I recommend that a Ad Hoc committee be formed to be known as Section/Chapter Coordination Committee with Jim Howard as Chair. The purpose of this committee is re-activation of sections/chapters in arrears; maximizing rebates for sections/chapters; coordination of Area/Council Chairs; and other duties as assigned by the Director. In keeping with our Region's tradition of being the first to develop and implement innovative initiatives for the benefit of our membership, I have elected to hold our first meeting of the 2000 ExCom via e-Conferencing. Director Dale Caston has graciously approved the necessary time and funds to hold training sessions as part of his December 1999 ExCom meeting. Please take advantage of these training sessions and be prepared to participate in our January 2000 ExCom meeting. I would like to congratulate Director Dale Caston on his leadership and commend all of those who have made his term another remarkable success for the Region. I hope and pray that you will give me the support and dedication to continue making Region 3 the region others try to emulate. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Richard L.
