To: Region 3 ExCom From: South Carolina Council Subject: End of Year Report The four South Carolina Sections of IEEE have been very active this past year. All Sections were involved early in the year with Southeastcon, mostly the Columbia Section, host of the event. Each Section has continued to set up meetings of importance to their members: in November, a Professional Engineer (PE) requirements meeting was held at the Columbia Section and a next generation radio meeting was held in Charleston (Coastal Section), with 38 members and guests in attendance. The Piedmont Section continues to work closely with students in the area, and the Central Savannah Section continues to grow in it's first year back from dormancy. All Sections have plans to continue to actively pursue speakers on topics of relevance to their membership. Sections Congress was a great hit with our Section representatives. All Sections sent representatives to the Congress and several plans are in place to make use of the information gathered at that event. Southeascon generated a solid financial background for our Council, thanks to the successful Chairmanship of Nancy Gunderson and the help of those volunteers in the Columbia and Piedmont Sections who gave so much of their time to make this event a great success. Lee Stogner announced that the SC Council website has been expanded to include a new section to help unemployed engineers get in contact with companies for interviews for prospective employment. Unemployment has adversely affected three of our four Sections. Term of office has been expanded to two years for the Council. All officers will remain except for Nancy Gunderson, who announced her resignation from the Council's treasurer's duties effective at the end of the current year. After Southeascon and the birth of her second child, this is a most deserved break. Plans for next year include: Establish a statewide Technical Chapter on Power and Computers; signatures to make this possible are being collected. John Montague, Columbia Section Chair, is leading this effort. One of the purposes for this Chapter is to have access to distinguished speakers to come to this area. Start some sort of electrical-based device competition between high schools in the state, possibly sponsored and supported by the sections. Student paper contest between Clemson, USC, The Citadel and SC State is tentatively set for March 1st, 2003. Winner will represent the state at Southeascon. Review our volunteer roster and begin getting new volunteers involved in the state council. The South Carolina Council, its Sections and Student branches are planning to participate in Southeascon. Respectfully submitted, Marilene Guardia-Baker SC Council Chair
