It meets on the 2nd Thursday, 7 months each year: January, February, March and April in the spring and September, October and November in the fall. All are dinner meetings but there is no charge for non eaters. Recent Meetings Our January meeting's talk was by a representative of "Metro Crime Prevention of Florida." The presentation discussed personal and home safety. Demonstrations were provided of various systems and techniques to discourage intruders and assailants. Our February meeting included a presentation from SCORE, the consulting arm of the Small Business Administration. The representatives presented services available to anyone interested in starting a small business. They also extended an invitation to members of the IEEE to share their expertise and experience and become part time counselors to help others wanting to start a business. Our March speaker is Butch Shadwell. Butch's presentation is on his research and development work on a Laser Gun System. General Activities We are continuing to encourage eligible members to upgrade to Senior and/or Fellow member status. A chair person has volunteered to be the point person on this endeavor. We hope to put together an event using SSVR funds to encourage upgrading. Attendance at meetings has been stable, including good representation from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University student members. Science Fair Prize The section has awarded a $100 prize and a trophy in the Tomoka Regional Science Fair project on January 24th. The winner was David Kundinger of Deland High School. His project was "Does the wavelength of light affect the distance it will travel in a fiber optic cable." We felt that awarding such a prize may help encourage interest in Electrical Engineering careers. Allan Jusko Daytona Section Chair a.jusko@ieee.org
