IEEE Miami Section Report for April 2008 Region 3 Meeting

Opportunities for Engaging the member, volunteer, non member, public:
The section will be sponsoring the IEEE-PES International Electric Machines and Drives Conference in May 2009 (IEEE IEMDC2009) (https://www.IEMDC2009.org)
The section conducted several activities over the past three month and several other technical and social activities have been planned for the next several months into June.
The section will continue to be very active and will participate in many activities that benefit the members and enhance our interaction with the community. We will also continue to seek organizing conferences that will benefit our members and our profession.
Notable section activities (positive and negative)
The section submitted all its reports (officer, meetings and financial) to IEEE headquarters on February 20, 2008. Confirmation was received. The section reported more than 30 technical activities including an workshop on wireless communications held at the end of June 2007.
The section sponsored and hosted the Florida Regional Future City Competition for the 8th year in a row. The Winner, Saint Thomas the Apostle Middle School was the Florida state winner. They represented the state in Washington DC during Engineers week. The section Chair attended a part of the National finals competition in Washington and met of IEEE_USA President Russ Lefevre. The section is continuing its normal activities in the form of technical meetings, administrative and student activities as well as community relations.
The section is continuing to participate as a supporter to several minority school programs to help young school kids form poor areas in Miami seek science and engineering field. Section members give lectures and presentation, classroom activities and projects as well as mentoring.
The FIU student branch is participating in Southeastcon'08. They are working on several hardware entries and plan to participate in the student paper competition. The Miami-Dade student branch may also participate in the Southeastcon’08. The student branches and FIU and Miami-Dade help the section with its activities with large number of students.
