August 5, 2003: Governor General Announces New Appointments to the Order of Canada
OTTAWA – Her Excellency the Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson, Governor
General of Canada, today announced 109 new appointments to the Order of
Canada and ten promotions within the Order. The new appointees include
seven Companions (C.C.), 30 Officers (O.C.) and 71 Members (C.M.). There
is also the appointment of Vaclav Havel as Honorary Companion. These
appointments are in effect as of May 8, 2003. Recipients will be invited
to accept their insignia at a ceremony to be held at a later date.
Wallace Stanley Read, C.M.
As an executive in the provincial utilities sector, Wallace Read headed
the teams responsible for the design and implementation of new
hydroelectric power plants at Lower Churchill Falls. He also managed the
expansion of Newfoundland's power system into the northern regions of
the island. With steadfast leadership, he played an instrumental role in
the expansion and modernization of the electricity industry in
Newfoundland and Labrador. In addition, he served as president of the
Canadian Electricity Association and the Institute of Electrical and
Electronics Engineers, where his mentoring skills have benefited the
next generation of engineers.
