Abstract:
Recent work on the down-conversion process in optical waveguides has
detected optical rectification. The experiments were carried out at the
Siemens Research Laboratories in Munich and involve the mixing of
optical signals in an InP-based waveguide. Experiments at a wavelength
of 1550nm showed the presence of linearly dependent optical
rectification signals. The results are in good quantitative agreement
with theory. Some interesting potential applications for high-speed
optical data processing have been identified and will be discussed.
Speaker's Biography:
Michael Cada graduated from the Czech Technical University in Prague in
electrical engineering in 1976 and received the Ph.D. degree in
technical sciences in 1979 from the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in
Prague. Since his g raduation, he has worked as a Research Associate
with A.M. Prokchorov in Moscow, as an Assistant Professor at the Czech
Technical University, as a Research Fellow at the Polytechnic University
of New York, as a visiting Researcher at NRC, as a Research En gineer at
MPB in Montreal, as an invited Professor at Ecole Polytechnique Federale
in Lausanne, Switzerland, as an Industrial Fellow at BNR and as a guest
Scientist at Siemens in Germany. Dr. Cada is currently a Professor of
electrical engineering at the Technical University of Nova Scotia in
Halifax and a director of the Optical Communications Laboratory.
