ISIS -- Taking its place between the solar wind and the earth's field! |
Named after the Egyptian Queen of the heavens, ISIS I and ISIS II, quickly followed its predecessor, Alouette I, in 1969 and 1971 respectively. As the new generation in satellite technology, they were able to perform more scientific tasks. ISIS II, for example, took pictures of the aurora borealis from above. These early satellites proved that the aurora and the accompanying radio blockouts result from solar wind, flowing in from space, reacting with the magnetic field of the magnetic north pole.
