Seminar
on January 26,2001 Student Seminar Explores Networking The Annual IIEE-IEEE Student Multi-Topic Seminar 2001 of IIEE-IEEE Student Branch was held on January 26, 2001, at the Institute of Industrial Electronics Engineering (IIEE) in Karachi, Pakistan. The theme was "networking the world" and it explored how the IEEE provides a forum for sharing information and ideas, especially among engineers in developing countries who are the driving force behind the expansion of their countries' industrial economies. The attendees exchanged views about issues faced by industry, listened to lectures on the latest technological advancements from the leading experts in the field and interacted with students from other engineering universities in Karachi. The Seminar was spread over three sessions. The inaugural session was anteceded by the project exhibition and later the technical session. Topics ranging from fuzzy logic to PLC based industry applications were discussed in front of a jury. Technical sessions and lectures raised the students' awareness of diverse fields such as information technology, water management and other industry applications. The guest of honor was Engineer Abul Kalam, Vice Chancellor NED University of Engineering & Technology, Karachi. Being a veteran IEE (UK) member, throughout all his professional life, he put some light on the importance of professional affiliation with professional bodies like IEE (UK) and IEEE (USA) and praised the role these professional organizations are playing in developing countries like Pakistan. He also appreciated the numerous activities of IIEE-IEEE Student Branch in raising the awareness level of the students and hoped that this Student Branch, being a model for all other educational institutes in Pakistan would in future keep up this tradition. The occasion was made all the more auspicious by the presence of Dr. Anwar-ul-Haq, Chairman Pakistan Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (PCSIR) as well as Mr. Shahid Suleman Jan, Chair IEEE Karachi Section. Overall this seminar was a great success considering the feedback that was received at the end. Organizing this seminar provided the students with the opportunity to gain practical management experience -- skills that will be helpful in the working world. A big success, this seminar proved beyond doubt that even in third world countries like Pakistan, the forum of IEEE can not only provide a platform for engineering professionals, but can also be a harbinger of progress and development. An article exploring this Multi-topic Seminar, held earlier year 2001, has also been published in “University Exchange”, IEEE Institute, issue October 2001.
