This student society, the EMBSS - UK&RoI, is an official student club of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS).
What is the EMBS?
With more than one-fourth of its approximately 10,000 members residing outside of the United States, the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS) is the largest international society of Biomedical Engineers in the world. EMBS has been serving the needs of Biomedical Engineers throughout the world since the early 1950's and through its leadership is striving to develop new ways to serve its members with workshops, publications, and distinguished lecture series.
What is our Field of Interest?
The field of interest of the Society is the application of the concepts and methods of the physical and engineering sciences in biology and medicine. This covers a very broad spectrum ranging from formalized mathematical theory through experimental science and technological development to practical clinical applications. It includes support of scientific, technological, and educational activities. NB: For our Student Society you do not need to study a subject that is directly related - an interest in Biomedical Engineering is all you need!
How our Student Society got started
To be a member of the IEEE EMBS has certainly many benefits, especially when it comes to making the 'big step' from the student life to the working life. In the USA there are many professional as well as student Chapters, i.e regional representations. However, in Europe there are professional Chapters in most countries but very few Student Chapters/Clubs and there was none in the UK! So we felt it is time to do something about it and get a student society organized. But first there was a little 'problem' to be tackled - Student Chapters/Clubs are usually established for a single university, but compared to the US there are not many BME courses running at UK unis and BME student numbers tend to be small. So we dared to think of something new, an EMBS Student Club on a national scale! We argued our point, asked for approval, and... here it is: The IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Student Society - UK & Republic of Ireland. The EMBSS - UK&RoI was initiated and established by Andreas Pohlmann, a postgraduate research student at Oxford Brookes University, in Autumn 2000. He has been the chair of the society for the first year and shared the management with the fellow student and vice chair, Nathapong Suthiwongsunthorn.
Why an EMBS Student Club?
We are aiming to offer to other EMB students a way to contact other BME students (maybe to find an answer to a burning question), to meet up, exchange thoughts and ideas, make new friends, and learn more about the fascinating field of Biomedical Engineering. Our Society's notice board and bi-annual meeting are in the centre of our efforts. The EMB Magazine provides tutorials and review articles on topics that are not usually covered in the classroom, conference dates, and BME employment opportunities. As a Student Club we receive a free academic subscription to all of the EMBS publications. Additional benefits include modest funding for special events, such as a local student paper competition or support for seminar speakers sponsored by the Club. So, join our society and make our efforts.
