Editor's Turn

This Newsletter shows the extensive dynamics of your Society. Our thanks for this news should go to: Marsha Tickman, Rao Bonda, Rao Tummala, Atsushi Nakamura, Ralph Wyndrum, Merrill Palmer, James Morris, Emily Selves, Madhavan Swaminathan, Alina Deutsch, George Harman, Paul Wesling, Joe Brewer, Anthony Chan, Prof. Mihaela Radu, and many others. Our activities average about 50 members, ranging from a few at a TC meeting to 500 members at ECTC. Thus when a volunteer not only participates but also writes up a summary so all 4000 members can gain an inkling of the procedure.

These economic times are reducing membership in many societies. However there are some bright spots. One colleague at my company has been active in packaging for 15 years. During this time I have often given him spare copies of this Newsletter and he has often given papers for ECTC and IEMT. However, he joined IEEE and CPMT just one month ago. At about the same time some of our new engineers also joined IEEE partly because they see how the volunteer networking has resulted in the "older" engineers knowing where the opportunities are or what is about to happen before those that just go to conferences and read the journals. The lesson in here is that as a Society we should just keep building and not worry about a small drop in dues payers.
