The year 2007 was a busy one for the IEEE EMC Society and yours
truly. Chairing the 2007 IEEE International Symposium on EMC was
the highlight of my year and a great opportunity. It’s not
every symposium that celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the EMC
Society. I feel extremely fortunate to have had the opportunity
to not only chair the Society’s annual symposium, but to
have done so during the unique year of our 50th Anniversary.
I have a new respect for the Founders of the EMC Society and an
appreciation for how far EMC has come in 50 years. In 1957, engineers
weren’t addressing clock speeds above 1 GHz nor the new
challenges presented by wireless technology, broadband over power
lines, or magnetic resonance imaging, to name just a few developments
in recent years.
Along the way in 2007, through the 50th Anniversary Symposium,
I was fortunate to meet several of our EMC Society Founders in
Hawaii. I also worked with a great committee from around the world
who took the concept of “multi-tasking” to a whole
new level. You’ll note from the photos in this Newsletter
that many of the EMC 2007 Symposium Steering Committee members
wore different hats all week. That is, in addition to their Symposium
commitments, they were giving papers, chairing sessions, speaking
in workshops, staffing booths for their companies or organizations,
running the Society (President Andy Drozd) or other committee
meetings – you get the idea! Hats off, as they say in the
US, to the incredible EMC 2007 Symposium Steering Committee members.
You’ll find a pictorial recognition of the committee starting
on page 30, and, just as importantly, at the end of my letter
you’ll find recognition of the many companies and organizations
that supported the volunteer efforts of the committee members.
The EMC Society is indebted to these companies and organizations.
And, we must recognize our team of photographers at EMC 2007 noted
at the end of this letter for their numerous contributions to
this issue of the Newsletter.
In closing, I’d like to dedicate this Newsletter to my father,
the late Fred J. Nichols, whose products from and customers of
his company LectroMagnetics, Inc. inspired me to learn more about
the science of EMC. I appreciate his encouraging my involvement
in the IEEE EMC Society as well as his introduction to the many
people who make this a unique group of individuals. I’m
sure he would have greatly enjoyed the 50th Anniversary Symposium
and seeing the “Filter Queen” in the EMC History Museum.

With all the many activities taking place during the 2007 IEEE
International Symposium on EMC and 50th Anniversary events, a
crew of photographers was needed. EMC Society Photographer Ken
Wyatt wishes to acknowledge and thank his talented and dedicated
photography crew, including his wife Sheila, Dick Ford, Richard
