CEEM’2009

CEEM’2009, the Fifth Asia-Pacific Conference on Environmental Electromagnetics, was held at the Quest International Hotel of Xi’an, China from September 16 to 20, 2009. The first CEEM Conference was opened at Xi’an 13 years ago by the Chinese Institution of Communications (CIC) with strong support from the EMC groups of the Institute of Electrical Engineers (IEE) and the Institute of Electronics, Information, and Communication Engineers (IEICE) of Japan. The conferences have been held every three years in Shanghai, Hangzhogh and Dalian, China for the research of rapid progress of Environmental, Electromagnetic and EMC technology. The past four conferences were held with great success.

     CEEM is co-sponsored by the IEEE Communications and EMC Societies. The 2009 conference offered a very nice and productive IEEE EMC membership service to young engineers and scientists in Region 10.
     CEEM’2009 was less well attended than the last four conferences as it faced two large unexpected obstacles: the great world economic crisis and the world wide epidemic of the H1N1 influenza. However, the number of contributed papers remained at over 130; of these, 111 papers were accepted. The authors of the papers were from many countries, including Belgium, China, Israel, Japan, Poland, Russia, Switzerland and the USA. It should be noted that the quality of the papers and presentation techniques of the young engineers in Region 10 improves with each conference.
     The Executive Committee of the fifth CEEM’2009 Conference consisted of General Chairman: Professor Gao Yougang (Beijing University of Posts and Telecom.), China, and General Co-Chairman: Professor Ryuji Koga (Okayama University Japan). The important foreign committee members included Shuichi Nitta (Japan), William A. Radasky (USA), Michel Ianoz (Switzerland), Hubert Trazaska (Poland), Stanislav A. Sokolov, Engeny G. Sokolov and Amitabh Nag (Russia), Walter Van Loock (Belgium), Jacob Gavan (Israel) and Takeo Yoshino (IEEE EMC Society).
     The Opening Ceremony and Keynote Speech started at 8:30 am on Sept. 17. The Speech was presented by six speakers, including M. Ianoz, W.A. Radasky, S. Nitta, Shili-hua, J. Gavan and Junhong Wang. The 11 technical sessions, which include many valuable and interesting contributions, started in three rooms from the afternoon of September 17 to the morning of September 20.
     On September 19, an excursion was organized for foreign participants of the historic area. Xi’an has a very long history. Xi’an was founded more than 3,000 years by the Zhou Dynasty. The excursion featured the famous ancient place of the Museum of the Terra-Cotta Warriors and Horses of Qin Shihang (Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor) on a very rainy day.
     Region 10 Representative, Takeo Yoshino, set up a desk beside the presentation rooms on behalf of IEEE EMC Society Membership Services. The goal was to recruit engineers in Region 10 as new IEEE EMC Society members. The desk at CEEM’2009 was very successful! Professor Yoshino was surprised that many young Chinese engineers and graduate students rushed to the desk at the moment of the first coffee break. All of his IEEE EMC Society materials and 40 membership applications were taken by the end of the first day.                                                                     EMC
