IEEE Xplore brings to members' desktops...
|
The development of IEEE Xplore came in response to member demand that we make our web systems easier to use. So, during 1999 IEEE re-engineered its electronic publishing operation to incorporate the latest web features and technologies.
IEEE developed IEEE Xplore to support members' access to their personal journal subscriptions. While each IEEE entity continues to set business rules for member access to its publications, all of the services provided by OPeRA (Online Periodicals and Research Area) and Bibliographies Online (the collection of IEEE abstract/ citation records) will be available through IEEE Xplore.
Instead of two separate web sites (Bibliographies Online and OPeRA), we will now have one integrated site. Instead of doing a lookup in one place and then getting the article in another, it is all done seamlessly at one web site. And because the site is integrated with IEEE's Web Accounts, a single user ID and password works for everything.
IEEE Xplore allows individual societies to greatly extend their members' access to technical literature. IEEE Xplore also extends the reach of the IEEE Society's publications around the world. Non-members of the Society and guests visiting the site will have free access to browse the tables of content of all of the IEEE Society's publications, and to access links to author information and the Society's home page. This global outreach to non-members and institutions will greatly extend knowledge of the goals, activities and member benefits of the Society.
IEEE members will get access to IEEE Xplore by logging in to the system. This is easily done by establishing an IEEE Web account the same account used for renewing IEEE membership on the Web. Once a Web account is set up, the user name and password may be used to access content at any time. If a user forgets to log in, IEEE Xplore will prompt for a name and password when the user attempts to search, view or download a document. Once logged in, IEEE Xplore automatically recognizes access permissions to provide each user with uninterrupted access to personal subscriptions, abstract/ citation records and articles from IEEE Spectrum. Since the current OPeRA access method is not compatible with IEEE Xplore, OPeRA users will also have to establish an IEEE Web account.
IEEE members whose society participates in the OPeRA program will be able to access their subscriptions online with the use of their IEEE Web Account. If you have questions about your particular online access rights, please contact member-services@ieee.org for more information.
Full member access IEEE Xplore will be available Summer 2000. EMC
