EMC Symposia are exciting events! We have so
many wonderful activities to anticipate as we look forward to
EMC Symposia. To name just a few, one might enjoy attending technical
papers; hearing world-renowned speakers discuss some of the intricacies
of EMC; visiting some fantastic exhibitor booths; encouraging
students as they present their papers or discuss their EMC designs;
attending relaxing and enjoyable social events; having stimulating
conversations and visits with friends and colleagues; and watching
some fascinating demonstrations and simulations. The list goes
on and on. With the 2007 Symposium taking place in Hawaii, just
think of the fun we can have! As you plan for this great event,
the Education and Student Activities Committee encourages you
to take full advantage of a number of educational activities that
will be taking place. If you are able, please consider attending
the EMC Global University that is taking place throughout the
week and/or the EMC tutorial and workshop sessions being held
on Sunday and Monday. Both of these events give you the opportunity
to hear from world-renowned speakers. The “Fundamentals
of EMC” tutorial session organized each year by the ESAC
is a day-long event held Sunday which will feature John Norgard
discussing EM Radiation, David Pommerenke discussing ESD, David
Hockanson focusing on EMC Troubleshooting, Lee Hill examining
some EMC Case Studies, and Brian Lawrence providing a preparation
session for the NARTE exam. These are wonderful opportunities
to learn from the best!
We always have excellent technical papers presented throughout
the Symposium. Many of these papers will be written by students.
Thinking of students, the winners of the student design contest
will also be at the Symposium to present their projects. Please
consider encouraging all of these students as they present the
results of their work. They are the future of the IEEE EMC Society!
Speaking of the future, another activity sponsored by ESAC is
the University Grant Award. The purpose of this key award is to
encourage and assist universities throughout the world in their
efforts to establish EMC courses at their universities. Two winners
have been named for 2006: Grand Valley State University (Grand
Rapids, Michigan) is the winner of a $10,000 award for the proposal
entitled “Establishment of a Course in Electromagnetic Compatibility
Principal Investigator” written by Dr. Bogdan Adamczyk.
Huazhong University of Science and Technology (Wuhan, China) is
the winner of a $5,000 award for the proposal entitled “Development
of a Senior-Level Class on EMC Principles, Techniques, and Applications
in English Media” written by Dr. Tian-Lin Dong. These winners
will be acknowledged during the annual Awards Luncheon, along
with the winners of the Student Paper Contest, Student Design
Contest, Beranek Travel Awards, and a host of other distinguished
awards. The 2007 Call for Proposals for the University Grant will
be posted on the ESAC website (https://www.ewh.ieee.org/soc/emcs/edu/index.html)
shortly after the Symposium. Keep your eyes posted!
Have fun as you plan for this great event. We look forward to
seeing you there! Stop by the ESAC table at the Symposium and
chat. We plan to have a limited number of EMC Society Experiment
CDs available for faculty members, section chairs and regional
chapter chairs. This CD includes three EMC experiments that were
filmed at previous Symposia and features Jasper Goedbloed, Douglas
Smith and Clayton Paul sharing some interesting insights. EMC
