Mr. Greg Kiemel and Dr. Thomas Jerse recently began their two-year terms as the newest Distinguished Lecturers (DLs) of the IEEE EMC Society. They replace Dr. Keith Hardin and Dr. Cheung-Wei Lam whose terms expired last year. Our other three DLs, Dr. Bruce Archambeault, Dr. Michel Ianoz, and Mr. Chris Kendall continue their terms through December of 2004.
Before introducing Greg and Tom, I want to acknowledge the contributions of Lam and Keith over the past two years. During their terms, they volunteered to spend many days away from home, family, familiar food, and familiar people. They traveled by airplane, by car, and busses in order to give presentations in the Unites States and Asia. Our Society’s local chapter meetings have benefited from the in-person contributions of these bright and learned volunteers. For those of you who have attended one of their presentations, I am sure you know what a very fun and educational experience these folks provide. Please join me in thanking our retiring DLs, and welcoming our new expert speakers.
This past year in Boston I was lucky enough to attend the annual chapter chairman’s luncheon that was held at the 2003 IEEE EMC Symposium in August. Many leaders of our local chapters expressed their appreciation for being able to host a Distinguished Lecturer during one of their regular chapter meetings. If you haven’t seen a DL at your chapter meeting, you are really missing one of the most popular benefits that our Society offers. I am certain that this year’s new speakers will continue the DL tradition of offering excellent technical education, advice, and entertainment.

Greg Kiemel is the Director of Engineering at Northwest EMC, Inc., where his responsibilities include overseeing the testing and certification of a wide variety of wireless devices. He has 17 years experience in the EMC field. Prior to his ten years with Northwest EMC, he worked as the lead regulatory engineer in the personal computer division at Epson Portland, Inc. and as an EMC engineer at Tektronix, Inc. Greg is experienced in the areas of FCC, EU, Industry Canada, BSMI, and VCCI regulatory approvals and noise suppression techniques in product design. He is a NARTE-certified EMC and ESD engineer. He is active in ACIL, USCEL, and TCB committees. He is also a member of the TCB Council Executive Committee. He earned his BS in Engineering from Weber State University. Greg presents frequent design seminars and has assisted in the regulatory approvals of hundreds of products.
Greg is prepared to give any of his favorite presentations including: How to Test Wireless Devices for EMC Compliance, The EMC Authorization of Wireless Devices in the US and EU, and How to Test FCC Part 15E Devices for EMC Compliance.

Dr. Thomas Jerse is an Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina. Tom also keeps busy in the commercial aerospace world by serving as an Associate Technical Fellow of Boeing Corporation. He has over 24 years of industry experience and nine years teaching experience in academia. He has been giving EMC lectures in industry since 1981.
Prior to his teaching and research at The Citadel, Tom earned his PhD under Dr. Clayton Paul at the University of Kentucky at Lexington. Tom has extensive experience in commercial EMC, both through his work at Boeing Corporation and as an R&D Project Manager at Hewlett Packard. While at HP, Tom led a team responsible for the development of high performance spectrum analyzers, and in his spare time developed HP’s Design for Electromagnetic Compatibility and its accompanying full prose textbook. Tom also is an accomplished musician, music teacher, and broadcast engineer!
He holds one patent, and is a member of the IEEE EMC and Microwave Theory and Techniques Societies, Eta Kappa Nu, Tau Beta Pi, and the ASEE. Tom was awarded the 1992 IEEE EMC Society’s President’s Memorial Award.
Tom is prepared to give several different lectures including: High Speed Decoupling Focusing on Problem Components, The Role of Symmetry in Minimizing Common-Mode Emissions, and Interference in Communication Systems Caused by Multiple Emitters. EMC
