On 2 December 2003, the Advisory Committee on EMC (ACEC) of the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) threw a surprise
retirement reception for Dr. Ralph Showers and his wife at the
Hyatt Regency Hotel in New Brunswick, New Jersey. The ACEC is
comprised of members from IEC committees that have EMC aspects
in their standards. Principal members include representatives
from the Special International Committee on Radio Interference
(CISPR) and TC77 (Electromagnetic Compatibility). The ACEC’s
role is to advise the IEC Standardization Management Board of
any EMC issues needing SMB attention.
Dr. Showers was quite surprised as ACEC chair at the reception.
Dr. Bill Radasky welcomed him and then read the many accomplishments
of Dr. Showers over the years, highlighting his work on the ACEC
as well as in CISPR and TC77 and their subcommittees representing
the US. The photo shows those that feted Dr. Showers at the reception
from over a dozen countries. Dr. Showers then reminisced on his
activities not only in the ACEC, but also in the IEC and CISPR.
These stories would fill a book! (Please note that Dr. Showers
has been interviewed for the history of the EMC Society for our
50th Anniversary Symposium in Hawaii in 2007.) To cap off the
event, all raised their glasses and toasted Dr. Showers and wished
him well. He will indeed be missed.
