Letter from the Editor
Newsletter Editor Janet O’Neil enjoys an EMC 2007 “kick off” social event with Flavio Canavero in Portland. Professor Canavero is the new Technical Editor of the Newsletter, an EMC 2007 committee member, as well as co-chair of and speaker at the Global EMC University that debuts in Honolulu, Hawaii during the EMC 2007 Symposium.

EMC 2007 Symposium Sets Records!
In our last issue of the Newsletter, it was noted that the Fall 2006 issue was the longest to date at 120 pages. In this issue, we have another record to announce – over 300 papers were submitted for the 2007 IEEE International Symposium on EMC technical program! The authors represented an almost equal balance of papers submitted from Asia, the United States and Europe. Accordingly, this symposium promises to be the most international one held to date. For the press release on this topic, please see page 52.
Since this year’s symposium also marks the 50th Anniversary of the IEEE EMC Society, we have a special 50th Anniversary and History Section in this Newsletter starting on page 42. Many thanks to Dan Hoolihan, Chair of the EMC Society’s 50th Anniversary and History Committee, as well as to Brian Lawrence, Executive Director of NARTE, for their contributions to this special section.
I look forward to my dual role as the Newsletter Editor and Chair of the EMC 2007 Symposium Steering Committee this year. It’s a busy time, but an exciting one too! The committee this year is very unique in that the members are from various locations around the world. Many prominent members in our Society volunteered to help on this special anniversary symposium; several members are past Symposium Chairs, several members are IEEE Fellows, several members are past Presidents of the EMC Society, and several are up and coming leaders in our Society. It’s been truly an honor working with this committee and I can promise you the results of their efforts will be a world-class 2007 IEEE International Symposium on EMC in Honolulu, Hawaii!
Please visit the Symposium website at www.emc2007.org where you’ll find the following updates and more:
• Technical Program - Paper titles and abstracts, workshops and tutorials, special sessions
• Global EMC University – As per the ad on page 22, this special track is NEW to the Symposium
• Exhibitor Museum – All exhibitors are encouraged to show early products to emphasize where we’ve been and where we’re going
• Symposium Schedule – Check this out BEFORE you make your travel plans, as you won’t want to miss the workshops and tutorials starting on Sunday, July 8 or the Anniversary Celebration and Island Tour on Friday, July 13
• Overflow Hotel – The Ala Moana hotel is now contracted to handle the many requests for hotel guest rooms since the room block at the host hotel filled early
We will have company from other IEEE Societies in Hawaii this summer. As per the ad on this page, the Microwave Theory and Techniques Society will hold their annual symposium this year in Hawaii over June 3-8 (www.IMS2007.org). The Antennas and Propagation Society will hold their annual symposium over June 10-15 (https://hcac.hawaii.edu/conferences/aps2007)
Since IEEE membership is rapidly growing in Region 10 (Asia), the location of Hawaii promises to attract these new members all summer long!
We look forward to seeing our new and established IEEE and EMC Society members at EMC 2007! EMC
