Georges Goldberg, a pioneer in Switzerland and Europe in the field of EMC, passed away at the end of September 2009.
Georges Goldberg graduated from the Federal School of Technology in Zürich as an Electrical Engineer. In his professional career he worked mostly in the fields of Telecontrol and Telecommunications in Power Networks.
He was actively involved in EMC standardization for many years. A member of the Swiss National Committee on EMC for 30 years, he chaired TC 77 (Electromagnetic Compatibility) of the International Electrotechnical Committee from 1985 to 1994 and ACEC (Advisory Committee on Electromagnetic Compatibility) from 1992 to 1996. During his retirement, Georges continued to be an active participant in IEC work as the convenor of Working Group 14 (Functional Safety) of TC 77 and as a member of ACEC.
Goldberg’s contributions were instrumental in developing the structure of the IEC standards (basic, generic and product standards), most notably in the IEC 61000 series on EMC. During his chairmanship of IEC TC 77, he undertook a thorough reorganization of the committee, leaning towards a phenomena/experts oriented structure. He also initiated new fields of work for the committee, such as power quality, measurement techniques with regards to human exposure to EM fields (low frequencies and high frequencies) and EMC and functional safety.
In addition, Georges Goldberg also organized IEC seminars on EMC and presented IEC work in EMC symposiums throughout his career. From 1985 to 1998, he was a delegate of the Swiss National Committee and IEC Observer to CENELEC/TC210 (Electromagnetic Compatibility).
In 2000, Georges Goldberg received the prestigious IEC Lord Kelvin Award, an inscribed gold medal, which since its creation in 1994 has established itself as a landmark within the electrotechnical community.
