IEEE-IAS Electric Machines Committee

Minutes of the 2001 meeting

October 3, 2001, Chicago, IL

The meeting was called to order at 5:30 pm by EMC Chairman Dr. Longya Xu.  Attendees were asked to sign the attendance sheet.

I.  2000 meeting report:  The minutes from the 2000 meeting in Rome were approved by voice vote (motion moved by John Oldenkamp, seconded by Thomas Lipo).

II.  Chairman report:  Longya presented the Chairman's report (see attachment).  The report was accepted.

Bruno gave a report on the number of abstracts received by EMC and also the number of abstracts accepted.  The EMC received 133 abstracts for the 2001 Conference, 70 of which were accepted.

Longya has requested a budget increase from $700 to $1000 for the EMC, mostly to pay for awards and for mailing expenses.

III.  Old business:  There was no old business.

IV.  Subcommittee reports

1)      Prize papers:  The following papers were selected to receive the EMC Prize Paper Awards:

First Place:

“Quantitative Evaluation of Induction Motor Broken Rotor Bars by Means of Electrical Signature Analysis”

by A. Bellini, F. Filippetti, G. Franceschini, C. Tassoni, and G.B. Kliman

Second Place:

“Performance of PM assisted Synchronous Reluctance Motor for High Efficiency and Wide Constant Power Operation”

by S. Morimoto, M. Sanada, and Y. Takeda

Third Place:

“Axial-Flux Permanent Magnet Motor for Direct-Drive Elevator System without Machine Room”

by R. Ficheux, F. Crescimbini, O. Honorati

2)  Standard subcommittee:   Report from Ahmed El-Antably, sub-committee Chairman.

Ahmed gave a report on the progress of IEEE 114, Single Phase Induction Machine Standard, and also on IEEE 839, Hermetically Sealed Motors.  The ballot on IEEE 114 did not go through and was modified and resubmitted.   IEEE 839 was withdrawn and will be submitted next year.  A concern was raised by Thomas Lipo why EMC members are not receiving the ballot to vote on it.  EMC chairman needs to find out how the standard can be seen by the EMC members.

Ahmed asked to retire from his position as Standard Sub-Committee Chairman.  He was thanked with a round of applause for his years of service.  Anyone interested to succeed him should contact Bruno Lequesne (bruno.Lequesne@delphiauto.com).

3)  Awards subcommittee:  No report was given.

4)      Transactions paper review:  In 2000, EMC has received 80 papers for Transactions and Prize Paper consideration from IAS Annual Meeting.  All papers have been sent out for reviewing.  Complete results for 48 papers have been received.  3 papers are accepted without mandatory changes, 28 accepted with mandatory changes, and 17 were rejected.  Partial reviewing results for 32 papers have been received.

5)  Education subcommittee:  Ahmed El-Antably gave a report where GE did not pay any money for education, same with Emerson.  SMMA might be willing to give some money for education.

6) Session Chairmen reports:  The session chairmen gave their reports on the presentation of the papers in their sessions.  Papers which were not presented will be disqualified from the Transactions review.

V.  New Business:
