A budget of $1,000 is being requested:
The vice-chairman, Peter Wung, reported the paper review and acceptance for IAS 2004 conference.
Bruno Lequesne announced the prize paper awards for the 2003 IAS Electric Machines Committee. He thanked the subcommittee comprising of: Aldo Boglietti, Uday Deshpande, Iqbal Husain, Bruno Lequesne, Tom Nondahl, Longya Xu
Third prize:
“Parameter measurements to study surge propagation in induction machines”
Authors: T. Humiston, P. Pillay, Clarkson University, Postdam, NY 13699, USA.
Second prize:
“Torque Ripple Improvement for Synchronous Reluctance Motor using Asymmetric Flux Barrier Arrangement”
Authors: M. Sanada, K. Hiramoto, S. Morimoto, Y. Takeda, Osaka Prefecture University, Osaka 599-8531, Japan.
First prize:
“Mitigation of Bearing Electro-erosion of Inverter-fed Motors through Passive Common Mode Voltage Suppression”
Author: D. Hyypio, Regal-Beloit Corp., Wausau, WI 54401, USA.
Aldo Bogliotti: Induction Motors 1: 3 good papers presented, 2 papers withdrawn, Average of 25-30 people.
Allan Wallace: Salient Pole Machines: 7 Papers. Between 30-38 people before coffee break, 20-22 after.
Jerry Lloyd: Special Machines: 6 Papers. All papers presented, 3 by the same person/author. Attendance: lowest-18, highest-43.
Tom Jahns: Permanent Magnet Machines 1: All 7 papers presented, well attended session with attendance between 50 and 76.
Keith Bradley: Switched Reluctance Machines: 6 papers presented, Highest attendance 31, 13/14 in the last two papers.
Gerard Capolino: Diagnostics: 7 Papers scheduled, 2 papers missing. Gerald made the suggestion to put papers of authors who are in doubt of attending at the end of the session.
Rob Cuzner and Co Huynh reminded that the Product and Services session will start at 8 o’clock on Wednesday, Session # 38. The session is on practical aspects in motors and generators.
Prof. Capolino invited all in the SEMPED conference on behalf of Prof. Ron Harley. The conference will be held in Vienna, Austria.
Volunteers were sought for 15 session organizers and 20 session chairmen. The number of session chairmen is doubled since many may find it difficult to travel to Hong Kong. Pete Wung collected the names of the session organizers and session chairmen.
It may ot be possible to organize the session since it will be held in Hong Kong in 2005.
Hamid Toliyat: We will keep the same number of sessions and decide after we see how many digests have been submitted. We would like to keep an acceptance rate of between 50-67%.
The new Fellows from the EMC, Jerry Lloyd and Longya Xu were recognized. Subsequently all fellows present at the meeting were recognized.
Level 1: In co-operation with: IAS doesn’t review papers from this conference for transactions. However, the conference can advertise in IAS magazine.
Level 2: Technical Co-sponsorship: Limited number of papers presented in that conference, about 20%, can be reviewed by IAS for transactions.
Level 3: Sponsorship: IAS shares the financial responsibility, and gains from the conference are shared as well. All papers can be reviewed by IAS for Transactions (such as, IEMDC).
Tom Jahns: Opportunities should be considered strategically as they come up. Here we have the opportunity to make stronger links with the international community and increase our membership.
Ed Lovelace asked how many papers are typically presented in ICEM
G. Capolino: In Krokaw, Poland 1000 digests were submitted for ICEM 2004, 700 accepted, 600-700 people attended.
Alfredo Vagati cautioned not to open the door because we would then lose our attendees.
Longya Xu requested to help international people. This will make IAS more popular. We can show our activities. This should also not be used as a back door to get into the transactions. We need to tell them that. There is a responsibility for review.
Tomy Sebastian mentioned that the Meetings Department is working on the issue. They will come with a proposal.
Gerald Capolino: ICEM is not asking for entry into transactions, but a technical co-sponsorship.
Bruno Lequesne: Requested Longya for ICEM in Asia and Capolino for ICEM in Europe to send emails to the Meetings Department.
Tomy Sebastian reported on the status of EMC membership. Currently, there are 228 members, with 55 members not being in the IAS list.
Tomy Sebastian moved to sponsor the Energy Conversion Congress ’09 as a combined conference of IPCSD Department sessions of IAS and PESC sessions. Ion Boldea seconded the motion.
Fabio Crescimbini asked who makes the decision. He mentioned that board has not yet decided.
Vagati said that he is against the motion. PESC is a successful conference. This is not going to be just one sponsorship. This is a big change.
Pragassen Pillay suggested that IEMDC is also in odd years. The Congress should be changed to even years.
Tom Jahns recognized the risks. IEEE looks at this area fragmented, and wants to build strength. This needs careful planning. There is no hidden agenda to that. For any of the committees this is a combined focus for strong industry participation. It is a step forward.
Hamid Toliyat: EMC section of IAS Transactions is the only place to publish Machine Design.
Longya Xu: The motion is quite large and will make a big change.
Olarunfemi Ojo suggested that we approve with some constraint.
Bruno Lequesne mentioned that it takes many years to organize a conference. For organizing it in 2009, now is the time to decide.
The discussion was closed and the motion was called for votes. Vote counting followed. There were 13 votes for and 16 against with 12 abstentions. The motion was rejected.
Bruno made the motion to adjourn the meeting. Uday seconded the motion. Members unanimously agreed to adjourn the meeting.
