Senator John Heinz Pittsburgh Regional History Center - Monday October 14th

What’s it all about?”    Join your friends and board the “trolley” for the History Center where history comes alive and where the past connects to the future.  Located in the Strip District of Pittsburgh, the Chautauqua Ice Company building was transformed into the new home for the History Center in 1996.  Much of the original interior architecture was maintained and well worth a visit.  Where else can you discover 250 years of history, in a deeply visual, interactive setting?  Aside from many traveling and permanent exhibits such as the glass and the Heinz 57 exhibits, board a 1940’s trolley car, see a stainless steel car, explore their fascinating Library and Archives and their Museum Shop.

The Senator John Heinz History Center is just the starting point of what will be come a very colorful day as you wonder through the “Strip District”.  This area is an adventure in sensory overload.  A kaleidoscope of fruit and vegetable colors competes with the chatter of sellers and shoppers in a dozen languages.  The area is centered on Penn Avenue and Smallman Street capped by 16th and 22nd Streets.  In old storefronts and open-air stands, some 80 merchants hawk stuffed animals, jerseys, sweatshirts, hair wear, compact discs—and food just to mention a few.   Fine china, wine, antiques, kitchen accessories, pottery and specialties imported from Italy, Greece, France, Mexico and Asia can also be found in this boutique/unique part of Pittsburgh.
