Technical Committee on Analog Signal Processing

Activities: June 1999-May 2000

As with previous years 1999-2000 was also a very successful year for the Analog Signal Processing Technical Committee with involvement in numerous conferences, workshops, short courses and special issues. The committee membership list currently stands at just over 30 members. The current committee members are renowned experts in the analog signal processing field, who are both committed to, and active within, the ASP field. A new website for the Analog Signal Processing Technical Committee has been developed and has been linked the IEEE CAS Society page.

The official website is: https://www.ieee-cas.org/~asptc/index.html

A rough draft of duties and procedures for the officers and member of the ASPTC have been proposed and will be finalised during this year’s annual meeting

Ramesh Harjani (University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, USA) took over from Alison Payne as Chairman for 1999-2000, with Gert Cauwenberghs (John Hopkins University, USA) as Vice Chairman.

Contributions to the Technical Program of ISCAS 99/00

ISCAS is one of the major international conferences for the CAS-ASP community, and thus nearly all members of the TC-ASP are involved in the organisation or reviewing process.

Technical Track on Analog Circuits and Signal Processing

As the ASPTC chair Alison Payne was track chair for the Analog Signal Processing Track. This was the largest of the tracks, with over 280 ASP papers submitted. The acceptance rate for papers that were submitted to this track was about 60%. All the 280 papers were allocated to be reviewed by committee members. Alison also arranged for chairs of all analog sessions at ISCAS.

Special Sessions

ASPTC members have actively participated in either organising or presenting at a number special sessions at ISCAS. A short list follow:

Session Chairs

TC-ASP members chaired 25+ sessions at ISCAS 2000. A somewhat complete list is provided below.

Short Courses

Tutorial short courses at ISCAS presented by members of the TC-ASP:

Other Conferences, Workshops and Short Courses

Members of ASPTC are active a large number of conferences and workshops other than ISCAS. In fact the vast majority of ASPTC members have published, chaired and organised or presented short courses at these other conferences. A number of these are listed below.

Special Issues, books and editorships

Members of the TC-ASP have been in promoting ASP activities through the organisation and participation in special issues of IEEE and IEE journals. A number of our members have also authored/edited books of these special sessions. These are listed below. Additionally, number of ASPTC members are also actively involved in a number of IEEE and IEE journals as editors and they are also listed below.

Officer and member duties (Proposed)

Chair

Responsibilities:

1) Chair the annual meeting. This meeting is usually held at the end of the bearer term. Additionally, these meetings have traditionally been held at ISCAS. The chair is responsible for setting up the annual meeting.

For setting up the annual meeting at ISCAS the contact person at IEEE, is Barbara Wehner (b.wehner@ieee.org). She organizes the date, room, lunch etc. She will also need to know how many people to expect (send an email to everyone a month or so before ISCAS asking who all are going to be there). You should probably also let her know the other meetings that members are likely to attend, like the TCAS editorial meetings, and the Nonlinear and Circuits and Systems for Communications Technical Committee meeting.

2) Arrange for help during the ISCAS review process. The technical committee chairs coordinates with the ISCAS program chair and vice chair the review of ISCAS papers. In general the ASP TC chair is responsible for coordinating the review of the "analog" papers at ISCAS. The chair assigns each of the ASPTC members with the appropriate list of papers. This list is generated using the members research interests as a guide. In addition care is taken to ensure that the review workload is divided as evenly as possible.

Duration: one year

Election process: The vice chair is elected during each annual meeting of the analog signal processing technical committee (ASP TC). The vice chair automatically becomes of the committee chair the following year.

Vice Chair

Responsibilities:

1) Take over for the chair if for any reason the chair is unable or unwilling to complete term.

2) Help chair with ISCAS review process.

3) Coordinate other committee activities. This will vary from year to year

4) Take the minutes at the annual meetings. The meeting notes are to be typed up and sent to the web coordinator within a month of the annual meeting

Duration: one year

Election process: The vice chair for the following year is elected during the annual meeting. Names for the vice chair are proposed by committee members. Voting is done using secret ballot. In the case that there is only a single name that is proposed then a show of hands can be used instead of the secret ballot

Web coordinator

Responsibilities: maintain website and member mailing list.

Duration: ongoing

Election process: volunteer

Current: Hanspeter Schmid <schmid@isi.ee.ethz.ch

Members

Responsibilities:

1) Be an active citizen. Actively take part in your field of research. Report any major activities to committee.

2) Help with the ISCAS review process. Each member is expected to help coordinate the review process for approximately 20-40 papers. You are expected to find 3 or 4 reviewers for each paper. Please, ensure the timely returns of the reviews. Evaluate the reviews and make decisions on the papers assigned to you. These reviews and decisions are to be forwarded to the chair.

3) Propose special sessions for ISCAS

Duration: ongoing

Election process: Prospective members are invited to the annual meeting to become members. Please speak to one of the current members to propose your name during the annual meeting. The location and schedule for the annual meeting

Note: Members are automatically deleted from the ASP TC membership list if they fail to attend three consecutive meetings.
