IMPROVE OUR KIDS EDUCATION
Are you a science professional interested in working with classroom
teachers to improve science education in New Jersey classrooms?
PROGRAM
The nationally recognized Science Alliance project is seeking
science professionals to volunteer to work with K-12
science/math/technology teachers in Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex,
Morris, Somerset, or Union counties. Once matched, the
scientist/teacher teams develop hands-on, consumer-relevant,
interdisciplinary modules or lesson plans. The science
professional brings science expertise to the team and the teacher
insures that the innovative activities are age appropriate and
educationally sound.
More than ever, today's students need a comprehensive
science-technology-mathematics background to assist them in making
career choices and to develop the skills necessary to compete in
the global workplace. As adults they will need a basis to make
wise consumer choices. They will need to address complex issues
such as the environment, health-care, space exploration and a
growing number of science-related and technology-related questions.
TASKS
The scientists' commitment involves donating about 40 hours from
November to April for module development with a teacher partner.
At the end of June, the teacher/scientist teams train other
teachers in the use of the contemporary, classroom-tested modules
at the Science Alliance Summer Institute. In this way, the modules
find wide exposure and use throughout the school districts in New
Jersey and beyond.
BENEFITS
Benefits to the industry professional/corporation include
opportunities to publicize and showcase the product/service of the
company, to assume the role of a good corporate citizen, and to
help produce a scientifically literate work force.
