Team,
here are my notes from last night's meeting.  Please look them over and give correction and additional ideas.  Thanks very much for your participation.  Ed

In our planning meeting Jan 30, 2003, we selected the following topics and the persons indicated agreed to pursue speakers for them. Thanks to Iwan, Tony, Alex, Mario for their active participation.

  1. Power Line communication (PLC) Iwan
  2. Hudson-Bergen light rail line -- Tony
  3. Stand by power, UPS, etc -- Alex
  4. Washington Group project on Coal Fired Power Plant in China, contrasting China practices, design, etc. with US projects—Tony
  5. Fuel Cells – Alex (Alex believes that someone in the Princeton area is working on a fuel cell program)
  6. Ocean Wave Energy – Mario (his company doesn’t want to talk about it until their first unit is working, targeted for late this year)
  7. Developments in fusion energy and tour of PPPL –Alex hold in reserve in case of a schedule hole.

Tentative Schedule: work toward a Feb talk on item 2 above and a Mar talk on item 1

_______

Some other thoughts on possible topics that we considered but have no immediate leads on speakers. Keep on list for possible future work.

Solar cells/ solar energy projects (Australia project on tall chimney with turbines)

If not covered in UPS talk, Microturbines

42v Automotive electrical systems, automotive electric drive systems

other alternate energy—geothermal, ocean tidal, ocean thermal gradient

345KV solid dielectric transmission cable

power connectors, power bussbars for power distribution within cabinets (Ed can get a speaker but it was deemed that there would be little interest in such.)

Also, check on Wednesday colloquiums at PPPL. Alex indicates that they are open to the public
