The Hydroelectric Power Subcommittee is a subcommittee of the Energy Development and Power Generation Committee of the IEEE Power Engineering Society. It is actively engaged in developing standards, guides, and technical presentations in the area of hydropower. To find out more about the activities select among the following topics:
PURPOSE STATEMENT
Study and review engineering and design aspects of hydroelectric generating station systems and equipment including: hydro station design features (conventional, pumped storage, mini-hydro, tidal power), hydro station control systems (including computer applications and plant automation and in liaison with Station Control Subcommittee), hydraulic unit speed governing systems, prime movers, and reservoir management and level control systems.
Develop standards, recommended practices, and guides with respect to hydro generating station systems and equipment as described.
Coordinate with other technical committees, groups, societies, and associations as required.

GOALS STATEMENT
The Hydroelectric Power Subcommittee resolves to:
1. Continue the development of standards, guides, and recommended practices by utilizing experienced and knowledgeable engineers in the hydroelectric field.
2. Develop top quality technical papers in the hydroelectric field with emphasis on project experience papers and practical application of new technology/analysis techniques.
3. Develop liaison with other standards/technical organizations having a common interest in hydropower, such as IEC, CIGRE, ASME, ASCE, and EPRI.
4. Facilitate information interchange among interested parties in emerging technologies, new developments, and advanced techniques in the hydroelectric field. Targeted areas include hydroelectric machine condition monitoring, automation of hydroelectric plants, and pumped storage plant upgrades.
5. Seek recognition for the work of Subcommittee members, authors, and working groups through the IEEE awards program.
6. Increase the awareness of the Subcommittee's activities by publicizing the activities of the Subcommittee in member's companies, trade journals (Hydro Review) and technical journals (Water Power).
7. Increase membership in the Subcommittee and working groups and in the preparation of technical papers. Ensure the Subcommittee has a broad representative base in its membership. Encourage electrical engineering and the field of hydroelectric power in the schools, workplace, and professional activities.

Membership in the subcommittee and the work groups it sponsors is based on membership in the IEEE and in particular in the Power Engineering Society. Individuals are expected to participate and contribute to the committee and work groups with their expertise, interest, and willingness to devote time and efforts in its proceedings. There may be instances where non-members attendance is beneficial to certain specific work group activities. For example, expertise outside the normal area of IEEE such as civil or mechanical engineering may desirable for the work group's effort.
The present constitution of the Subcommittee and the work groups is a diverse assemblage of individuals from industry, academia, users, and consultants. It is presently Chaired by John Yale (pictured at left).
