Hotel ACCOMMODATIONS

The SHAW Conference center is located at Downtown Edmonton. The IROS organizers have arranged block reservations with two nearby hotels: Crowne Plaza and Westin. Both these hotels are located 8-10 minutes walking distance from the SHAW conference centre. We have also blocked some rooms at the University of Alberta student residence (Schaffer Hall). It takes about 5-7 minutes by the train to reach downtown from the University of Alberta. The reservation information for the hotels and Schaffer Hall is given below. The rates quoted are in Canadian dollars (which is roughly 0.75-0.8 US dollar).

Please make sure to state that you are an IROS 2005 Conference participant and ask for the "IROS 2005 Conference Rates" when making your reservation with the following hotels.

The special rate will be available as long as the hotel rooms are available, up to and including July 3, 2005. All reservations must be made with a credit card number or an advanced deposit. For each additional person, there will be a charge of ($10+tax)/night.

Optional Tours

Local Tours to Banff, Jasper and Columbia Icefields

 

The IROS Organizing committee has arranged, in cooperation Magic Times Tours, following three (one day) tours featuring Alberta's Rocky Mountains in Jasper and Banff National Parks.

 

  1. The Magic of Jasper National Park

  2. The Magic of Columbia Icefields, Jasper National Park

  3. The Magic of Banff/Lake Louise, Banff National Park

 

All three tours have been arranged on August 6 (Saturday), and the delegates (and their companions) will be able to avail themselves of only one of these three tours. Each of these tours will need a minimum of 30 persons to operate. The Tour details are as follows.

 

Details of the Tours

 

 Details of the three tours are given below.

 

1. The Magic of Jasper National Park

 

This fully escorted full day tour departs the Shaw Conference Centre at 7:00 a m. We stop in the town of Edson, at 9:00 a m, for donuts and coffee, to go, and arrive at the Park Gates at approximately 10:30 a m. During our 45 minute drive into the townsite of Jasper, we look for Rocky Mountain Sheep, Bighorn and Elk stopping along the way for photo opportunities. We proceed to Maligne Canyon where the mighty Maligne River rushes through deep limestone canyons. We then travel a portion of the majestic Icefields Parkway enroute to Athabaska Falls where the entire force of the Athabasca River drops over sheer cliffs into gorges below. Enroute to Jasper, an opportunity is provided (optional) to ride the Jasper Tram, the highest arial Tram in Canada, We proceed to the  Jasper Townsite for Lunch (not included) and shopping in the delightfull boutiques that prevail. At approximately 3:30 p m we proceed to Patricia and Pyramid Lakes Jasper and then depart Jasper at approximately 4.30 p m arriving Edmonton at approximately 8:30 p m.

 

2. The Magic of the Columbia Icefields, Jasper National Park

 

This fully escorted day tour will depart the Shaw Conference Centre at 7:00 a m. After a brief stop at 9:00 a m in the Town of Edson for coffee and donuts to go, we begin this exciting journey to the largest mass of ice in the Canadian Rockies – over 325 square kms!!!. Arriving in Jasper National Park, Alberta’s largest National Park, we see many different forms of animal life including Mountain Goats, Bighorn Sheep, Elk and Brown Bear. We continue our journey entering one of the most majestic Highways in the world, the Icefields Parkway. We arrive at the Columbia Icefields at approximately 1:15 p m and after completing Lunch (not included), we embark upon the Snocoach Tour (cost included), that takes us high up on the Athabaska Glacier, over 6 kms square and 300 metres thick!! At approximately 4:30 p m, we continue our journey along the Parkway cresting Sunwapta  Pass at 2000 metres before arriving at Saskatchewan River Crossing for Dinner (not included) at approximately 5:30 p m. Departing at 6:30 p m, we turn West onto the spectacular David Thompson Highway. We arrive Edmonton at approximately 10:30 p m.

 

3. The Magic of Banff/Lake Louise, Banff National Park

 

This fully escorted day tour will depart the Shaw Conference Centre at 7:00 a m.We arrive in the the City of Red Deer, at 9:00 a m, for coffee and donuts to go. We then travel the scenic David Thompson Highway and, very soon, begin to enjoy spectacular views of the Rockies. We proceed directly to the world famous Lake Louise, Canada's diamond in the wilderness and the spectacular Mount Victoria and Victoria Glacier. After enjoying Lunch (not included)at the magnificent Fairmont Chateau Lake louise Hotel and a brief walk around Lake Louise we proceed to the town of BANFF for a tour of the Townsite the Cave and Basin, Bow Falls and the Sulphur Mountain Gondola Lift (optional). After shopping and Dinner on Banff Avenue, we depart Banff at approximately 6:00 p m arriving Edmonton at approximately 10.30 p m. 

  

Tour Costs

 

The costs of each of the three tours are as follows.

 

  1. The Magic of Jasper National Park:  $75/person based on a minimum of 30 persons.

  2. The Magic of the Columbia Icefields, Jasper National Park: $110/persons based on a minimum of 30 persons.

  3. The Magic of Banff/Lake Louise, Banff National Park: $85/person based on a minimum of 30 persons
     

Note that these tour costs are the maximum $ amount per person based on an assumption that there will be a minimum of 30 passengers on the coach. However, each tour has a capacity of 45 passengers and, if the number of participants exceeds the minimum of level of 30 passengers, tour costs will be incrementally reduced. Tour costs include Luxury Motor Coach, Tour Escort, Park Entrance Fees and GST. The meals and costs of other attractions e.g., Jasper Tram, Tour #1, Sulphur Mountain Gondola, Tour #3, are not included. The cost of the Columbia Icefield SnoCoach, Tour #2, is included in the tour cost.
