The Haptics Symposium is a bi-annual, single-track conference that brings together researchers who are advancing the human science, technology and design processes underlying haptic (force and tactile) interaction systems . Our community spans the disciplines of biomechanics, psychology, neurophysiology, engineering, human-computer interaction and computer science.

We solicit high-quality, original submissions in all areas of haptics including, but not limited to:

  • Psychophysics and perception
  • Biomechanics and motor control
  • Haptic interactions and their design
  • Haptic device design and dynamics
  • Haptic rendering and modeling
  • Control system design and analysis
  • Systems and networks involving haptic interactions
  • Application of the above, including areas such as education, rehabilitation, medicine, computer-aided design, skills training, computer games, driver controls, simulation and visualization

The Haptics Symposium will again be held in conjunction with the IEEE Virtual Reality Conference in Waltham, Massachusetts. Waltham is part of the culturally and scientifically rich Boston metropolitan area. The venue is near Cambridge and environs with its many haptics companies and academic researchers, at universities including MIT, Harvard, Boston University, Tufts and Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Further information about the venue can be found on the IEEE VR site.

Paper and extended abstracts are rigorously peer-reviewed, then accepted for either oral or poster presentation and published in the IEEE Proceedings. All categories of submission are eligible for industry-sponsored awards.

Submissions are sought in the following categories, which are more fully described at the links below:

The 2010 IEEE Haptics Symposium will take place at the Westin Hotel in Waltham, Massachusetts, just 15 miles outside of Boston. The Haptics Symposium is co-located with and held at the tail end of the IEEE VR Conference. Information on conference accomodations can be found on the IEEE VR site, or you may directly link here to Westin Hotel Reservations. Note that the conference group rate is available until February 19, 2010, subject to availability. The IEEE VR site also provides travel information on how to get to the conference hotel from the airport via shuttle, taxi, rental car, or train. You may also want to refer to the Boston Tourism Information site in helping plan your trip.

To facilitate the lively exchange of ideas, the conference program includes four different presentation types (oral presentations, posters, hands-on demonstrations, and teaser presentations), plus commercial exhibits. When preparing contributions for the conference, authors should carefully follow the Presentation Guidelines.

This year, Haptics Symposium 2010 will be having our banquet at the Blue Wing in the Boston Museum of Science! This will be held the evening of Thursday, March 25, 2010. All Blue Wing exhibits will be open from 6:30pm-10:00pm while you graze on excellent food from Wolfgang Puck Catering (they said Wolfgang's calendar was pretty full so he may not make it). Buses will leave the Westin in Waltham at 6:00pm and 6:15pm sharp and return guests to the Westin around 10:30pm. Come and enjoy one of Boston's biggest techie attractions!
