Scope and Goals The workshop is aimed at strengthening R&D collaboration between the European Union and Russia in the field of Networked Embedded and Control System Technologies (NECS). To this effect, representatives from both the research and industrial communities will be brought together to share experiences, present and discuss recent scientific and technological achievements, and identify areas of common interest and potential R&D collaboration in the field of NECS, namely within the scope of upcoming calls of the European Union’s 7th Framework Programme.
The workshop is being organised by the EC-funded project NESTER www.nester-ru.eu , “Networked Embedded and Control System Technologies for Europe and Russia”. NECS is one of the key priority ICT areas defined in the 7th Framework Programme (ICT Work Programme). The objective of the NESTER project is to identify opportunities for greater R&D cooperation between Europe and Russia in the field of NECS and to help R&D teams from European Union and Russia to initiate joint NECS projects.
Workshop participants will have the opportunity to:
- Meet with European and Russian leading players within the NECS field
- Get insight into the latest technical developments presented by researchers with first-hand experience
- Take advantage of networking opportunities to establish new research-research and research-business contacts
The Workshop will aim to strike an adequate balance between research and industry-related issues, focusing specifically on greater involvement of industrial stakeholders in the project.
The workshop participants will also have an opportunity to receive free advice on technical and administrative matters pertaining to the European Commission 7th Framework Programme, on preparing project proposals, and on potential partners for joint NECS projects.
Target Audience
The workshop targets an audience of 30-60 representatives (at the level of project manager, researchers, head of laboratory, etc.) from European and Russian organisations (academia, research institutes & laboratories, multinational corporations, SMEs, etc.) specializing in the areas that are at the core of the NESTER project.
Topics of Interest
The focus areas of the Workshop include but are not limited to the following:
Real time software tools and their integration and platform-based design.
Methods and tools for productivity, composability, dependability, safety and security; low power consumption; validation; adaptivity and self-awareness; integrated design environments; design tools, interoperability for design space exploration; standardisation; technologies for efficient resource management and advanced model-driven development.
Design and Engineering of monitoring and control for complex/ large scale systems, including wireless sensor networks.
Modelling and design of next-generation robust, self-adaptive, networked large-scale systems; sensing, control, decision-making and smart actuation; architectures, integration of heterogeneous networked smart objects (e.g. in spontaneous cooperation); lightweight operating systems and kernels; open wireless protocols for harsh environments; wireless sensor networks; optimisation of large-scale dynamic systems and proactive process automation; advanced algorithms, architectures and platforms going beyond SCADA and DCS; standardisation
Multi-core and re-configurable computer architectures, programmability, compilation, tools and simulation.
Automatic parallelisation and beyond; high-level programming languages; homogeneous or heterogeneous multi-core and/or reconfigurable architectures; operating systems; testing, verification and debugging; continuous adaptation beyond the separation between compiler, runtime and hardware; virtualisation; legacy issues; machine abstractions and performance models; fast system simulation and analysis; tools and compilers for next-generation semiconductor fabrication technology
Of special interest are topics pertaining to the 4 industrial sectors designated by the NESTER project as high priority for EU-RU collaboration: transportation, telecommunications, energy and public security infrastructure.
