Keith Brown

Professor, IEEE Senior Member
President, IEEE Canada

Dr. Brown is a Senior Engineer with Ontario Power Generation’s Nuclear Division and an Adjunct Professor of Electrical & Computer Engineering at Ryerson University in Toronto.

Previously, he performed seminal post-doctoral research and development in short-range radio frequency communications for Scanimetrics, Inc. based out of Edmonton, Alberta. Dr. Brown has had the unique and rewarding experience of having served 15 years with the Canadian Forces as both a marine engineering systems operator and inspection diver. He retired from active duty in 2003. Dr. Brown has been an IEEE member since 1997 and has served in various volunteer capacities at the section, area and corporate level, most recently as Central Canada Area Chair from 2007 to 2009. Presently, he is Vice President of IEEE Canada, Director-elect for region 7, and a member of the Member and Geographic Activities, Strategic Direction and Environmental Assessment Committee.

Dr. Brown holds degrees in mathematics and physics and advanced degrees in electrical and computer engineering (MSc’99, PhD’03), all from the University of Alberta. He has published in excess of 23 technical documents of which many are within IEEE-owned entities and maintains a keen interest in the investigation and development of advanced instrumentation.

Dr. Brown is a Senior Member of the Institution of Electrical & Electronics Engineers and a Member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He has received awards and decorations from the Canadian Forces, Provincial Government of Alberta, APPEGA, and the University of Alberta. He is a member of the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta and Professional Engineers Ontario.

Hilmi Turanli

Hilmi M. Turanli received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees (both in Electrical Engineering) from Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey in 1976 and 1980, respectively. He was granted his Ph.D. degree from the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada in 1984.

He started working for the Turkish Electricity Authority in Ankara in the area of transmission lines planning. He served as a research and teaching assistant for the Middle East Technical University. Later, he was with the Electrical Engineering Department, University of Manitoba working on a special research project for Manitoba Hydro. Dr. Turanli lectured at the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of New Orleans as an Assistant Professor. He also worked as a consultant for Louisiana Power and Light Company. In 1986, Dr. Turanli started working for Manitoba Hydro. Currently he is the Interconnections & Grid Supply Studies Engineer in the System Planning Department.

In 1999, he was appointed as an Adjunct Professor at the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering, University of Manitoba. His research interests involve the Digital Simulation of Power-electronics Circuits, DC transmission, and Power System planning. Dr. Turanli is a Professional Engineer registered in the Province of Manitoba. He is a Senior Member of IEEE. He is the author or co-author of several published technical papers. In March 2001, he was designated as a Fellow of Engineering Institute of Canada.
