Biography: Makoto Iwasaki received the B.S., M.S., and Dr. Eng. degrees in electrical and computer engineering from Nagoya Institute of Technology, Nagoya, Japan, in 1986, 1988, and 1991, respectively. Since 1991, he has been with the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Nagoya Institute of Technology, where he is currently a Professor at the Department of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. As professional contributions of the IEEE, he has been an AdCom member of IES in term of 2010 to 2019, a Technical Editor for IEEE/ASME TMech from 2010 to 2014, an Associate Editor for IEEE TIE since 2014, a Management Committee member of IEEE/ASME TMech (Secretary in 2016 and Treasurer in 2017), a Co-Editors-in-Chief for IEEE TIE since 2016, a Vice President for Planning and Development in term of 2018 to 2019, respectively. He is IEEE fellow class 2015 for "contributions to fast and precise positioning in motion controller design". He has received the Best Paper Award of Trans of IEE Japan in 2013, the Best Paper Award of Fanuc FA Robot Foundation in 2011, the Technical Development Award of IEE Japan in 2017, the Nagamori Awards in 2017, the Ichimura Prize in Industry for Excellent Achievement of Ichimura Foundation for New Technology in 2018, the Technology Award of the Japan Society for Precision Engineering in 2018, and the Commendation for Science and Technology by the Japanese Minister of Education in 2019, respectively. His current research interests are the applications of control theories to linear/nonlinear modeling and precision positioning, through various collaborative research activities with industries.

Prof. Lihua Xie, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore

Biography: Lihua Xie received the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Newcastle, Australia, in 1992. Since 1992, he has been with the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, where he is currently a professor and Director, Delta-NTU Corporate Laboratory for Cyber-Physical Systems. He served as the Head of Division of Control and Instrumentation from July 2011 to June 2014. He held teaching appointments in the Department of Automatic Control, Nanjing University of Science and Technology from 1986 to 1989.
Dr Xie’s research interests include robust control and estimation, networked control systems, multi-agent networks, localization and unmanned systems. He is an Editor-in-Chief for Unmanned Systems and an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Network Control Systems. He has served as an editor of IET Book Series in Control and an Associate Editor of a number of journals including IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, Automatica, IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology, and IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems-II. He was an IEEE Distinguished Lecturer (Jan 2012 – Dec 2014) and an elected member of Board of Governors, IEEE Control System Society (Jan 2016-Dec 2018). Dr Xie is Fellow of IEEE, Fellow of IFAC and Fellow of Academy of Engineering Singapore.

Biography: She has carried out interdisciplinary research activities in the fields of complex mechatronic systems including machine mechanics, sensory-actuation, regulation and control, intuitive interfaces, expert systems, AI in particular with reference to the fields of Robotics and Flexible automation.
Main research topics: smart instrumental  robot design, kinematic and dynamic modelling and simulation; intelligent manipulation and soft grasping; surgical robots, climbing robots, extreme robotics; intelligent flexible manufacturing.
Author or co-author of some 250 publications in the area of robotics and manufacturing systems.
Referee of several international journals on robotics and industrial automation.

Prof. Qianchuan Zhao, Department of Automation, Tsinghua University, Beijing, China

Biography: Prof.Qianchuan Zhao received the B.E. degree in automatic control in July 1992, the B.S. degree in applied mathematics in July 1992, and MS and Ph.D. degrees in control theory and its applications in July 1996, all from Tsinghua University, Beijing, China. He is currently a Professor and Director of the Center for Intelligent and Networked Systems (CFINS) https://cfins.au.tsinghua.edu.cn, Department of Automation, Tsinghua University. His current research focuses on the modeling, control and optimization of complex networked systems. He has published more than 80 research papers in peer-reviewed journals and conferences. Dr. Zhao is an editor for the IEEE Transactions on Automation Science and Engineering and Editor-in-Chief of the journal Results in Control and Optimizaiton. He was awarded The National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars of China in 2014.

Prof. Jaesung Hong, Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology (DGIST), South Korea

Biography: Jaesung Hong received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in electronic engineering from Kyungpook National University, Korea, and the Ph.D. degree in frontier science from The University of Tokyo, Japan in 2004. He worked as a Foreign Researcher of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science with the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, University of Tokyo. From 2005 to 2010, he worked as a research professor with Kyushu University, Fukuoka, Japan.
Dr. Hong is currently a professor of Department of Robotics Engineering, DGIST, South Korea. His research interests include surgical navigation, surgical robotics, and Augmented/Virtual Reality. At the University of Tokyo, he has developed the first US-guided needle insertion robot for a movable and deformable organ. While he worked at Kyushu University Hospital, he developed customized surgical navigation systems, and clinically applied them to various surgeries.
After moving to DGIST, he studied medical augmented and virtual reality in collaboration with top hospitals of Korea. He has also performed various Korean government research projects including an endoscopic bone drilling robot and augmented reality for arthroscopy.
He received best paper and presentation awards in the conferences including KSMR(2018), HSMR workshop(2013), CARS(2011), ICAM(2010), ACCAS(2007), and JSCAS(2007).
He was co-chair of the IEEE/RAS technical committee on surgical robotics. He is now planning vice-president of Korean Society of Medical Robotics and secretary in general of Asian Society of Computer-aided Surgery.
